doll campfire - need materials advice
«
on:
August 23, 2010 05:27:28 PM »
My daughters and I want to make a toy campfire for their dolls. I'm not sure what I'm going to use for the base - maybe wood in a doughnut shape? I want to make a ring of rocks and leave an opening in the middle to put a battery tealight underneath. What kind of adhesive can I use that will work on rocks?

Liquid nails is awesome! So is gorilla glue, or something called E 5000 I think? Good luck. E.

I would think making fabric logs, by using long rectangles sewn into a tube with circles on the end. and put them in a star shape like this: *
sew 'em, then take 3 or six of these (can't remember how many..oops)
and sew them together
to make tear-shapes.
then make about three of them,
then add little flames in other colors and sew in top of the logs.
And attach little tealights between the logs with the glues gotgrey suggested?
just my thoughts...

Kunoni - thanks for the suggestion. I saw sets made out of felt like that when I was looking for ideas. I think we're going to try to go more natural and use actual sticks for the fire and real rocks for around the edge. I'll have to see how that works out. I don't want it to get too heavy.

On a very uncrafty note, Wal-Mart is now carrying a Madame Alexander line of 18" dolls, and one of the accessory packs is a campfire with marshmallows on sticks and other camping things - not as much crafting fun but it's pretty cute and could be worth checking out.

Fledgling - thanks for the tip. I saw those at Walmart this week, but I think we want to go for a more "natural" look.

I think you're talking about e6000 which i LOVE! it would absolutely work for this. i use it for just about everything...it takes about 4-5 mins to set then 24 hrs to dry completely good luck!

If rocks are too heavy, you can make your own from things you have at home. For a school project I once wadded up tissues and paper towel in glue, smushed them into rock shapes to stick to the wall of the little diorama of a proposed museum exhibit, and painted them when dry. It's a lot lighter, and you can make any shapes you want. Add a bit of mica powder if you want some shimmery rocks like the kind we find around here for making campfire rings.
...and of course you need to burn some of the sticks to make it look like the fire's gotten to them!
