Details of swap:
Have you been inspired by the Sketchbook project? Do you keep your own art journal or sketchbook, or have you always wanted to try?
This swap will be for one sketchbook or art journal, and you'll give your partner a head start on the art.

*I highly recommend that everyone makes the journal that they are swapping with their partner. However, if you don't feel confident in your bookbinding skills, please communicate with your partner (and organizer) as they may have a strong preference for the brand of store-bought journal or sketchbook for substitution.

The Book:
A handmade journal, size to be determined between partners, guidelines follow. The cover may be embellished, or not, but should be sturdy and resilient enough to be carried around in a purse or bag. Binding should be equally as strong - we're aiming for quality here.

The Interior:
Give your partner a head start! I will try to match partners based on strengths & talents so that your partner does something different from what you normally do. So do your thing, and get the journal going... place backgrounds, frames, doodle around the margins. Do a page of collage, a portrait of your cat, or use a page as a coaster for your glass of red wine. The exact amount should be discussed between partners, but I would say, as a guideline, that no more than 50% of the pages should be blank when you send.

The Theme:
Not all of us share the same interests, so please try to gear the journal towards your partner. I will ask you to choose three themes for your partner to pick between, and your partner will interpret your theme how they choose. Some examples might be: nature, joy, blue, travel...

An Extra:
If budget permits, include one of your favourite art journal supplies: your favourite colour of pastel, your go-to pencil, a glue stick, a sheet of stickers, whatever. I myself, am hooked on Pigma Micron 01 pens in dark brown, and would include one with my book.

Book Guidelines:
Paper matters: if you are using good (read expensive) paper, aim for the lower number, if your partner prefers cheap paper, use the higher number. Pay attention to the media your partner uses so that you can make appropriate paper choices.
Size: 9" x 12" - 10-30 pages, 7" x 9" - 20-50 pages, 3" x 5" 50-100 pages
Again: these are guidelines, discuss variances with your partner.

Aim for the highest quality that you can reasonably afford, and put your heart into this. You should be PROUD of what you send, and you will be thrilled at what you receive. We'll call this a 5-point swap, and all five of those points are for the journal.

Please take note: this is not a scrapbook! This is a place for you to write, draw, create and record.

I think this would be so cool!  I wish I could join but with school starting on Wednesday, the Sketchbook project and the two swaps I'm doing...  there's no way I can swing this one right now too.   Undecided  Maybe if there's another round during the spring or next summer I'll catch it.   Cheesy

I'll be thinking about this one. The whole thing is really intriguing, but I've only done some basic bookbinding. Also, I never REALLY considered myself an artist, but I guess crafty is arty, right? I better shut up now, or now one will want to partner with me...  Undecided

Dharma_rebel - join in and try it out! I'll try to gather up a list of inspiration sites for everyone.

I love Danny Gregory's book "The Illustrated Life" - it's a peek into some really amazing sketchbooks.

Oh - and please don't let lack of bookbinding skills turn anyone off. I'm sure that either you'll love learning how, or if it really is too much - there's always Staples (coil binding) or Moleskins. Smiley

eta: I just saw a canvas covered sketchbook on the Michaels website that you can customize the cover - also a super option for those who are not into the binding aspect.

I've never really done journaling, but I've been interested in starting and this seems like it would be a great way to do so! I'm thinking about this one for sure! Just trying to decide if I can squeeze it with the time/money situation of being a college kid Tongue But I'd love this, and I think it'd definitely be worth it. =]
