I think the cute vs scary should be personal preference... maybe have a Q in the questionnaire about what you would like to receive and what you'd want to make?

wooo! I am so glad you guys liked my idea   I would love to have them out on display for halloween

and I agree about letting people pick if they want cute or creepy....for me, I would not mind either, but prefer un-cute

How about including a question in the sign-ups that allows each swapper to indicate whether he/she would like to receive a cute chunky house, a creepy chunky house, or a surprise...with the understanding that all participants should be prepared to make either cute or creepy houses for their partners? 

Does this sound like a fair approach to the swap?  My main concern is that if we include a question that asks what the swapper would like to make, we might have a problem pairing folks up if we get more swappers that like cute chunky houses, or vice versa

There may not be anyone who wants a cute one!  It seems like everyone who has commented one way or the other likes the spooky ones (including me).

I love any excuse to make a chunky house - the only prob is that I don't celebrate halloween! I like things like vampires, and silly things like Addams family etc - so maybe I could ask for a theme like that?? Or would that be too restricting? - being a Christian means I can't really have real halloween themes on display

Or how about vintage style? I think I'd actually like one if each - scary, cute, vintage & random. (Thinking of a fortune teller, or maybe steampunk Halloween theme... I have too many ideas rolling around in my head right now!)

The original swap details for the chunky houses is based on "artist's choice". 

I sorta feel that we're restricting/limiting creativity if we specify what we'd like to receive   Having said that, I also like to try to accomodate everyone who wants to be in on the swap

So here's what I'm thinking.  I will not include a question asking for preferences in the questionnaire, but if someone has an aversion to morbid themes, strong religious convictions, etc., note that down in your swap questionnaire and I will try my best to match folks up.  No promises though...so everyone has to play nice and appreciate that good intentions were exercised when partners were paired up!

Sounds good Loves.  I agree that most times it's best if people do what they enjoy making.  I make my houses with a theme in mind and it's alot easier to work on them as a whole.
