Hello!

As mentioned in sweets caterpillar thread, I'm starting to think about my son's 1st birthday in Dec. As it's right around Christmas, I want to make sure we do something totally non-christmassy so that his birthday is kept totally separate.

His favourite toy is his giraffe blanket, so I'm thinking about a jungle themed party. This is where you come in. We're on a budget, so I'd love to hear your craftiest ideas please! I can bake, so will make the cake. I'm also not too bad at papercraft so can draft up some invites and decorations. But I'd like some of those special touches to make it different. Especially as he's one of a group of 5 friends that have all had babies within 4 months of each other - so lots of 1st birthday parties coming up!!

The only thing I would say is that I live on a small rock in the middle of the atlantic (off the coast of France). We're a little short on dollar/pound stores here but I can get stuff online of course.

I want to start now so that it's not all a panic and hopefully I can save some money.

Thank you!!

Questions - Are you decorating for this thing?  Inside or outside?  Number of guests?

the first birthday party is usually for the adults, so games aren't necessary unless older kids will be present.  For decorations, what about a tree trunk made of brown streamers and the tree top made of green balloons (attached to wall). (keeps the balloons out of the mouths of children, but they love to look at them)  You can try drawing jungle animals on poster-board and painting them.  Just use images from online and grid them out if you have trouble with free hand.  What about a monkey head cake?  Just use an 8 in round cake with half a cupcake on each side for ears.  Decorate with icing.  You could make fruit salad as one of the food (using like pineapples and bananas and coconut shavings)  Will see if I can come up with more later.
