I am in the Tentacle swap and my partner mentioned that she liked the two mermaid poppets she had received in other swaps. So I decided to try and make a half girl, half octopus poppet for her.

So, yeah... it was a bit challenging.  I first drafted up a pattern and sewed the body and tentacles together, turned it, stuffed it, and then realized it only had 6 legs.  And there were a couple of other things I didn't like about it. So back to the drawing board.

The second try worked out better although I think the tentacles came out a bit too skinny. And they were really hard to turn and to stuff.  I used a pipe cleaner in each one as well which just added to the difficulty in stuffing them.  Once I had the body together I used standard poppet pieces for the rest although with human hands and ears instead of the paws and cat ears.

And then I though she looked really creepy. Once I got the hair on that helped. And then I needed a dress for her and last some eyelashes.  I think those last touches kept her from being really creepy in the end.  I stuck to a color palate that my partner had in her room of sand, barn read, and navy blue. Finding something to use as the hair was the hardest.  I didn't want just a straight one color yarn.

I have to say I'm not sure I'd make another one of these just because of how long it took to turn and stuff all of the tentacles.  Although I do have some fabric that would work pretty well for the sucker side of the tentacled.

Wow! You did a fantastic job with a very challenging project! I love that you did a smooth transition from torso to tentacle.  I can only imagine how much of a pain they were to turn.  Her face is so sweet too!

Wow! She is amazing. You did a great job. She has a lovely face, and kudos on the tentacles. I don't even do tails because I don't want to turn them.

thats really cool!!  I can see how she'd be creepy without the hair and such.  But I love the way she turned out!  She's beautiful!

I am so jealous of the awesome poppet, and poppet mods. This is truly wonderful and very cute! Well.. I'll admit, the one without the head is a little weird. I like weird, though!

Thanks everyone!

That torso/ tentacle transition was a pain and I think would come out better if I did it again.  Although stuffing always help smooth out some of the oddities.

I think this patter could go weird pretty easily.  But I like weird and have a minor obsession with cute evil so I might have to attempt this again and not shy away from creepy and just embrace it.  And I have some great green yarn that would look like seaweed I could use as hair.

Oh my goodness this is amazing I love the evolution of the poppet pattern and I will not be showing my daughter this pic because she will want one she love octopus witch on Little Mermaid and plays often and she already wants a Mermaid poppet so maybe for Christmas. I almost didnt show my husband because he thinks I can pull out a poppet in no time flat but he said it was totally cool. Thank you you have inspired me.

That came out great! The tentacles look awesome and I LOVE the way you broke them up across the body pieces.

The first pattern I made had half a tentacle on each body side.  That's how I ended up with 6 tentacles the first time. I kept looking at each half and seeing four, forgetting that each side one was only half.  I definitely like how I did it in the end though.  It gave her more shape with the tentacles on each side although the arch between the sides went a bit too high.  With a tentacle coming straight off the seam the body ended up looking very hippy and heavy on the bottom.

Sounds like you worked through it and didn't let it get you down! And you figured out a way to solve the problem!

I think she is AMAZING! I can imagine looking at the legs that they were very hard to turn because they are thin, but in my opinion this adds to their elegance. Thank you for sharing!!

Oh, I love this.

Her face is so, so sweet and her body is AMAZING. You did a phenomenal job! I adore the colour you choose for the underside of her tenticles!

Very, very creative and so well executed. Smiley
