I bought this pattern a couple of weeks ago but I am not sure what fabric I want to use.  Please post a picture of your dress.  Did you have to alter it in any way?

well, i made a few changes to the pattern. it calls for the elastic in the back, and i decided instead to wear a belt with the dress, like the picture has, and skip the elastic. and, i made the skirt length shorter. when i cut the pattern out, the skirt came down to my ankles (im 5'5"), so i shortened that. but both of those were personal preferences.

ill post a picture soon!

This is the fabric I am thinking of using for my dress.  Maybe I will start it tomorrow.  I will definitely have to shorten mine, I am 5'3" so it will be way too long on me too.

oh, the other change i made was made the bias tape out of my fabric, instead of buying some from the store.

OMG...

will summer vacation (and my mom driving my "adult" self to the stupid suburban joanns when I go visit) EVER come?  not fast enough.  Thanks for the heads up on this great pattern!

ps.  any ready-to-wear size 8's make this?  what does that translate to with this pattern, size-wise?

thanks!

Almost done!  I just have to hem it.  I need to hem it alot so it may not be too easy!  It is really long.  I made my own bias tape and I think it looks nice.  The bodice was too big on me,  so I had to take it in.  That aways happens to me,  I get these weird underarm gaps!  Anyone else who makes this, post a picture!

i bought that pattern a couple weeks ago too. i'm kinda short too so i'll have to shorten it as well. i'm going to be making it for my wedding dress, so i wanna make a practice dress. i'm gonna use the top of this dress and the bottom of another.

I bought this pattern today!
I found black fabric with white polka dots at Wal-mart in the sale bin.  I've never used a pattern before and I'm afraid to cut it but I'm excited.
Kathyruth, your dress looks excellent!

Hey I made that dress.  The one with the full skirt.

I'm considering making 4513 as well, but I rather like drafting my own patterns these days.

Vood,  I don't cut my patterns, in case I want to use a different size later.  instead I use a tip I picked up from another craftster - I have a cutting wheel with a perforating blade, and I place my pattern over some brown parcel paper, then run the perforating wheel along the pattern lines, then i just tear out the perforated pattern on the parcel paper.  I also have a pinking wheel which I use for most of my fabric cutting as i find it easier!

Kathyruth - your material is beautiful & it suits the dress so well!

Woah...sorry about the extremely late reply.  I must have cleared out the new replys without seeing this one.
Anyhow...it turned out really good considering it was one of the first things I had ever sewn, and the first dress without any help.

As to 4513...I'm teaching one of my best friends how to sew.  This is her second project and the dress looks great.  I'll post a picture of it once it's done, or get her to join craftster  Cheesy so you can see another finished version.  I'll be going over to help her hem the bottom within the week.

We also had to adjust the arm whole gappiness, and shortened the dress to about midcalf.  (I think that the drawing show it about midcalf, but even the finished version by Butterick  is longer then that.)

i made this dress a couple of weeks ago and it was pretty easy.  i just had the normal altering to do, and once it was done it looked really nice. but when i put it on oh man it looked awful. it was the frumpiest most unflattering dress ever!! i think it may have been the type of fabric plus it was a little to big. but i'll try again and hopefully it will be as nice as yours!

kathyruth:

what kind of fabric did you use? i'm currently working on two of this http://store.sewingtoday.com/cgi-bin/butterick/shop.cgi?s.item.B4512=x&TI=10002&page=1

one is modified and i used linen-look, the other one is as the pattern is and i just used silk. i really like the way your dress falls, and since the patterns are pretty similar, i was just wondering. thanks!

karidactyl- I used a cotton blend fabric.  It is pretty lightweight.  I still have not hemmed (it is way too long!) my dress and I wonder if I will ever wear it!

Ok, Butterick patterns are $1.00 at hancock til today... I was there and thought I already had this pattern but when I got home realised I don't - so I think I'm going to make a quick trip there this morning and pick it up to use for a dress to wear to my niece's wedding in May...

Now I need fabric!

Wow!  I just realized you all had a sewalong going for this and it was my first pattern project!  You can see the results in http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=77732.0 (this thread) & feel free to leave feedback on your results with using the pattern!

I think it was fantastically easy to make & I used a 1.99 tapestry from Urban Outfitters to make the dress.

You're not going to believe this, but I have the ORIGINAL version of that pattern! It's in my to-do pile of summer sun dresses!
My grandma has been a professional seamstress for about 40 years and that is the first dress she made in Home Ec. in high school!
Good luck with it. I might have to go buy it (my pattern is desinigrating! lol).
