You know where you take a bunch of different little pictures and put them together in a collage to make another, much larger picture? I've seen some pretty neat ones of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis, etc.

What on earth is this called?

I tried photo collage on google (which asked me if I meant to say college and I got all twitchy...  Angry ) but that's not what I'm looking for. Something like this: http://homes.esat.kuleuven.be/~magudelo/GeneGolubMosaic.jpg (sorry, long load.. big pic)

But beyond what it's called, are there any free software programs that I can find to do this? I have an idea for a cross-stitch piece but I need software to figure out this pixel stuff or I'll go insane trying to do it on my own.

It's called photo mosaic. I haven't tried any of these programs, so I can't tell you if they're good or not or how they work, but here's a list: http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/photography/articles/34691.aspx
