Finally I broke the scary zipper ban and tried this tutorial:

Once the spell was broken I couldn't stop the flow and this is the result of some hours:

So cute! I made about a million of those last week, but different than the tutorial.  I used my gathering foot along both edges and then pressed the gathers down, attatch the center band and voi la!
