A little tute:

The pattern was adapted from my favorite shorts pattern that I've had for years.  Any comfortable shorts or pants pattern should work.  For the loose fit you want a non-tight-fitting pattern that works with non-stretch cotton fabric.

Here are the pattern pieces for the bloomers:

Front:

Back:

Legth of the pattern pieces is 39 inches.  This extends the waist up to just under the bust, and the legs down to mid-calf.  The width of the front piece at the widest point (crotch to hip) is 15 1/2 inches.  The width at the top of the front piece is about 12 inches, at the bottom about 13 1/2 inches.  The width of the back piece at the widest point is  17 inches.  Width at top and bottom approximately the same as the front.  These measurements fit someone with a hip measurement of 41 inches, and measurement just under the bust of 31 inches.

Cut two front and two back pieces.  Sew one back to the other back along the center back and around the curve of the crotch.  Sew one front to the other front along the center front and around the curve of the crotch.  Open out the front and back pieces and sew together at the sides.  At this point I sewed lace at the bottom of the legs, and sewed a casing on the legs about 3 1/2 inches from the bottom of each leg.  I used satin ribbon.  I measured 1/2 inch elastic to fit around my leg just above the calf, and threaded it through the casing, basting it in the seam allowance.  At this point you could distribute the ruffles evenly and tack them down at the outside seam.  Now you can sew up the insides of the legs.

You'll need some kind of bodice to sew the bloomers to.  I used this pattern as a basis for my bodice:  http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/contour-bust-dress-and-tute but you can use any bodice that ends right under the bust.  Sew your bodice and then gather the bloomers onto it, bringing the top of the bloomers right up under the bust.  Then put in a zipper or buttons down the front.  I'm lousy at making buttonholes so I used the placket from a used garment.

I hope this gives enough information for you to make your own Lady's Action Garment!  If you need more info, let me know, I can take photos while I'm making another Unibloomer.   Smiley
