I am a member of a theatrical honor society at my school, Campus Players. For our end-of-the-year banquet, we always have two options: dress formally and look all slick, or dress to match the theme. Since all of my high school semi-formal dresses don't fit anymore, and I am a desperately poor college student, I opted to go for the latter. The theme was "Literature" (broad, I know). I went with Mrs. Frizzle because it could be thrifted and altered (again, broke-as-the-ten-commandments student), I'm a biology major, I love her, and I already had the red, unmanageable hair.

I started with a denim wrap dress I had bought for a mission trip. I bleached jellyfish on the main part of the skirt and sand-dollars and starfish on the hem. First, I used a bleach pen, then (when that ran out after like, two jellies) some Soft-Scrub with bleach. I waited for it to dry and then threw it in the dryer to even things out.

Liz was made from a green teeshirt I stole took from the laundry room (it had been there for a month, it was time to go) and was hand-stitched as I watched Law and Order and tried to not freak out about my Microbiology final (that also went fine). She's stuffed with scraps of teeshirt, dryer lint, and some cut-up socks (also taken from the laundry room). She has little fabric paint eyes, one of them ran a little so she looks... Unique. I am aware that she looks nothing like a chameleon. I safety pinned her to my dress. Everyone (and I mean everyone) molested this poor little stuffed animal (I didn't tell them about the lint or the socks).

The fish-earrings were found under a couch and given to me at the beginning of the school year. The shoes were bought on super-clearance at the evil empire for 75 cents. And as for the hair, well, that's all me, baby.

That's adorable!  Great work on the bleaching!!  My kids love the Magic School Bus books, so they'd think this was great!

THIS ROCKS! (For real, I clicked the button). I knew who you were just from looking at the picture. This looks amazing. Good call on not telling people about the lint and socks. And yes, the evil empire is evil, but you can't beat 75 cents for a pair of sandals. Grin

I love this!  Miss Frizzle was one of my favorite cartoon characters as a kid.  I may have to start designing a dress for Halloween now.

Eco-friendly items, patterns, hippies, and more.

I'm on Ravelry, too!

This is so awesome. Thrifty crafts like this feel so rewarding, and you look great.

If only you had a small bus with you, like the ones in Playskool sets...

Also, improvisational stuffing FTW.
