I made this a few months back for a Doctor Who swap. After making some zombie barbie dolls last year I had been wanting to try a new project with them and I absolutely LOVE the Weeping Angels (and fortunately so did my swap partner) so I came up with this:

I used a dollar store Barbie doll knock off and paper mache (which was completely new for me) to sculpt the wings and the dress. The first thing I learned was that paper mache takes FOREVER to dry I made the wings separately and dried them in the oven in a few hours but couldn't put the doll in the oven so the dress took over a week to dry before I could even start painting.  Tongue
I am pretty proud of how she turned out though!

Thank You!
I had originally planned to make one for the swap and then one for me- but now that I know how much work it was I decided that I didn't need one after all!   This one was trial and error so even though I figured out the most efficient way to make the next one because I know what NOT to do, it is still a big project ( at least for me).

You know that does sound like it might work but I bet it would be kind of fragile. Painting it might be tricky but if you started with gray cloth you would only have to paint the doll ....  Now I am hoping you give it a try because I want to see how that would turn out....  Wink

This is so awesome but I don't think I would be able to sleep with that thing anywhere in my house. That was one of the scariest episodes, I really didn't want to watch the one in the new season that featured them as well but I did. I can't believe the base was a Barbie, crazy.

This is great! It really brings me back to that episode, I'd be afraid to have it in the house! lol

I've been dying to go at paper mache (haven't done anything with it since I was little), and I've also got a collection of really sad looking barbie dolls I've been picking up for free to alter. You just inspired me to combine the 2 together and come up with something.

OMG! I love it. I'm in the process of making little statues for my desk at work (first up is a dalek) and was going to do a weeping angel. I was going to do clay but this looks like something I may try!

I saw the thumbnail on the featured projects and freaked out a little bit.

You did an amazing job, and the Weeping Angels are so inherently scary, but we all love them anyway Cheesy (My ringtone is the doctor saying "Don't even blink, blink and you're dead!")

I'd try to make one, but I think that if I had it in the house, I might never blink again...

Thanks everyone for all the love on this project! I am so excited that so many people were familiar with the Weeping Angels, I figured no one would "get it" outside of the swap! I am so glad to know there are so many fans of the Doctor out there (here in Texas I feel like the only one who has ever seen the show sometimes!)

And to answer a question a few posts back... the stone like finish was achieved by sanding the finished paper mache to smooth rough spots then applying 6-7 light coats of gesso tinted with gray paint over the whole thing , sanding lightly between coats. That way the plastic doll and paper mache dress and wings all had the same texture when it was finished.

this is fabulous!!!!!   i'm planing on creating a weeping angel out of a barbie very soon (i just cut her arms so they will sit properly Wink  to go with my whoniverse themed bathroom....  i had no idea how i was going to do the wings, but paper mache seems like a wonderful idea!  ...oh, and i didn't read all of the pages of responses so i don't know if this got brought up or not, but i know from experience that barbies can stand up to low oven heat (enough to set sculpey at least Wink but if you were using a doll with a softer plastic, and the longer time it would take to set paper mache,i don't know :/  this is awesome!!!!

The cheap $ store doll didn't work in the oven- I did a 2 minute test at 150 and the head was VERY hot- I almost melted it- I might have been able to do the body and dress but I had glued the head on to the body by the time I realized how long it took to dry. I am thinking about making another one but would do ALOT differently this time.-- I would LOVE to see pics of your bathroom! I never thought to Who theme a bathroom! Great idea!

I first printed out a clip art picture of some wings in a shape I liked and enlarged them until they were the size I wanted, then covered the paper with clear plastic wrap and molded the paper mache into the same out line, with the top a bit thicker than the bottom. For the feathers I rolled little balls out of the paper mache into similar sizes then flattened them into the shape I wanted and made rows that slightly overlapped the row underneath it and the final row at the bottom I didn't add any 'feathers' just made lines to suggest separate feathers. Then I made small lines on the top half of each feather in the center with toothpicks and cleaned up some messy edges. I really lucked out though because I put them on a cookie sheet in the oven to speed up the drying and the top side dried more quickly than the bottom giving a nice arched shape to the pieces. I had no idea that would happen but I love how it turned out!  Thank you for looking!!!!
