I <3 Gibbous Altered Fashions sew-along!
«
on:
July 20, 2010 10:26:55 AM »
After the success of
woodland_faerie
's altered fashions swap, It seemed only right to start a sew-along for those itching to try this wonderful technique out and for those already familiar with the scrappy wonder of the gibbous style, to help others out as they try their hand at making a garment of their own!
You can see the swap thread here
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=339447.0
and the simply AMAZING gallery here
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=344323.0
PLEASE folks, pretty pretty please do put a link in your signature to this thread if you don't mind - we love new people joining in!
Of course you must check out the gibbous website here
http://www.gibbousfashions.com
and the beautiful flickr stream here
http://www.flickr.com/photos/missmust
and be prepared to be totally overloaded with inspiration!
I've recently (2012) started a pinterest board called 'Tattered Inspiration' for you to all swoon over. Find it here:
http://pinterest.com/dearestjackdaw/tattered-inspiration/
Constant updates at the moment, so keep checking back ♥
You simply MUST check out Magnolia Pearl.. think traditional free gypsy rose, romantic, whimsical, lacey crochet rags sewn together in a way I can't quite describe
http://magnoliapearl.com/
For some scrappy mixed-up inspiration, check out
Ludi
's thread here:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=271663.0
Whether you like the simple, minimal style with just a few messy stitches here & there, or the absolutely outrageous scrap-box-wonder style, let's all get together and work as a team to make our very own Gibbous-inspired garment
Ideas (and I will edit this as the thread comes along!):
*Work on an old item of clothing, or start from scratch! (If you're planning of stitching lots of pieces down to an old item of clothing, start off with something one or two times bigger than your usual size as the stitches will shrink the garment the more you play!)
*If you make a mistake, cover it up, rip it out or make a feature of it!
*Pick out scrap fabrics that have been sitting around waiting for the perfect project.. what better project than this?
*Check out carboot sales/garage sales/thrift stores and look for interesting vintage linens, patterns and laces.
*Take a beautifully embroidered pocket off of a boring shirt and add it to your new garment!
Let's BEGIN!!

I'm totally in, though I don't know what I'll be doing yet... I'll need to go thrifting for a good base garment, I think

The really great thing about this type of project is that 99% of the time, you'll already have everything you need for your making. I'm not sure I bought anything specifically for dress I made for
Cassadee
in the swap, in fact, the most money I paid out was for postage!
The other great thing is that this is a project that you can pick up & put down when you like, and YOU decide when it's finished
michpitts
Yey! If you didn't want to try altering a complete base garment, another idea is to use just the waistband from a pair of trousers or a skirt & build on that
I'm so excited for this sew-along! I will be choosing my colour scheme and materials over the next few days.
I picked up two vintage curtains a few weeks back at a charity shop. I've used a bit of one to make some bunting but I think I might use the other to use as the main material for a dress!
sugaree
, I know it sounds quite daunting at first, but I can assure you that once you get into the swing of things, it's actually pretty easy and super fun to do!

This would be easier if I had a dress form to build my garment on, then I could just stick it in the corner and add to it whenever I've got the time or inspiration strikes instead of having to drag everything out every single time. I might have to finally make that duct tape judy that's been on my list for ever and a day...

I've decided to make myself a gibbous style waistcoat. I couldn't find a nice free pattern online so I drafted one out of newspaper, made a mock-up out of cotton fabric and am now close to finishing it! (still need to figure out the front closure - buttons, zip etc and I need to neaten the edges) I used some curtain fabric for the basic waistcoat and have sewn on fabric bits like a crazy woman! Don't know if I should make a lining? Do you guys think it's necessary?
*Comments and criticism welcome!

Very cool, Katara! Way to start the sew along with pics!!!! A lining might be nice, but if your inside looks cool from all the stitching, it'd be a shame to cover it up!

Awesome, Katara, you will not need a lining as you used heavy curtain fabric for the base, I just finished getting my sewing table together and redid my craftopia to put this in the living room, now creation station. I will put my dress I want to alter on my dummy and get a pic.
Modify, This is the dress I want to do next
This is really a deep purple.
