I've been using a lot of old spoons recently to make rings and pendants! I like to use the old spoons 'cos it's recycling an old piece of metal that nobody wants anymore, and making a whole new piece out of it that doesn't require mining any more metal out of the ground. I'm out of spoons now though, and that makes me sad. But here's a few of the things I've made Smiley

Thanks for looking Smiley

Girl, if I weren't so poor that iolite pendant would be mine immediately.

I love it. The wee diamond is an especially lovely detail!

Thank you everyone! Smiley

p.s. Would love to hear more about the process(es) you used to create these lovely pieces.
First I find me some solid sterling silver spoons with pretty designs, which is way harder than it sounds. Then I use a tiny jeweler's saw to cut away the part I want to use - usually the long skinny part of the handle becomes a ring, the fat end part of the handle becomes a pendant, and the bowl part sits sad and alone on my bench while I try to figure out something to do with it that doesn't scream "I USED TO BE A SPOON" at the top of its lungs. (I prefer a quietly whispered, "Did you know I used to be a spoon?") I then either use a file to shape the cut end to be pretty (for a pendant); or form it into a circle and solder it closed (for a ring). Then I agonize for hours over what stone I like best, and finally pick one and make a bezel setting for it which I solder to the
piece where ever it looks like it most fits in the design Smiley Shiny everything up, set the stone and done!  That's kinda the generalized answer, lemme know if you had anything specific you wanna know!

Thanks! I think Goodwill has started getting savvy to the precious metals market, I -never- see solid sterling in their stores Sad They have a few listed on their online auctions though, which kinda defeats the point for me of going to a Goodwill. I can't use plated or steel so it's kinda limiting =/

Your work is amazing. Love it! Grin

I know it kind of defeats the whole upcycling thing, but have you ever tried taking impressions of pretty flatware and then using them to mould replicas out of PMC?

PMC is one of the few metally things I don't really work with. I personally don't like it because it's insanely expensive and it can have bad porosity issues in the finished pieces (I have seen some wonderful work done with it, it's just not my thing).  I'm actually in the process of trying to get casting equipment set up in my studio though, so I've been making rubber molds of each spoon in case I want to cast them myself later on Smiley And of course, once I teach myself wax carving a little better, I'll be carving my own designs instead of relying on old flatware hehe.
