In my fair city of San Antonio there is an annual Anime con that is in its third year...I have been wanting to go for the past two but never had the time off or money...this year I had both(and one of my fave bands the protomen were playing) and decided since it was my first con I would dress up. I had been wondering about what I would wear and I've been following the Lolita look for a long time but never had the balls or the money to wear the expensive dresses. So I made my first Lolita-ish type skirt. I used as circle skirt pattern and added in a high waist band, ruffles and a pettie coat. The shirt is just a store bought one but I did make the bow and cuffs.

Here is a close up of the cuffs and bow, and me being a ham. Roll Eyes

My badge, and yay I got a pic with one of the singers from the protomen!

Well I had so much fun at my first con that I'm already saving up for my next in November!

But does anyone have any comments or suggestions? I did get compliments on my outfit but no one really got the Lolita thing...one person said it was very retro as in 1950's and for that I do blame it on the fact that I wore my saddle shoes instead of maryjanes cause I didn't wanna walk around for six hours in heels.

Very cute, its a lovely skirt, you did a nice job.  Someone may have seen it as 50's ish because of the saddle shoes.  A lot of lolita skirts arent actually circle skirts so much as rectangles that are gathered, and some lolita get picky (and some down right snobby) about having the right shape.  I think you did a nice job

I think you did a good job for your first try. I'll admit I thought of the 1950s look when I saw the saddle shoes, but hey, you can just say that it was the theme you were going for. Start a new fashion trend in the lolita world. Wink I like the look and I think that making separates is a less expensive way to get the lolita look. Plus, you'll have more choices for clothing. And like cursive_queen said, some lolita can get downright snobbish when it comes to the style of other lolita. Haters gonna hate, no helping that. Roll Eyes

This is really good for a first try. Smiley I do think the skirt would have had a better shape with princess seams or a gathered waist (circle skirts lay a little weird over Lolita petticoats), but altogether, good job! You have a really cute style, and I'd love to see what you try next.

Thanks for the insight guys.  Smiley as soon as I get paid I'm gonna go pick up some more fabric and see if I can make a jumper.

Awww thanks Sue!

I just wanted to add that I have heard of snobby lolitas but the (very) few that I met were very nice but very shy.

Nice to meet you too. I love them! No its actually Turbo Lover. He was the only one who was able to greet fans buying merch cause everyone else had to take everything down.(I think they had another show in Houston the next day) From what he said and what I was following on twitter it was a hard few days. But I was so glad to catch them. I had never seen them live before and it was soooo much fun.

Thank you. It was just a circle skirt with an added high waistband.
