I put this picnic basket together as a wedding gift for a friend of mine.

I sewed the lining with pockets for cups and plates.
On the right side are napkin-cutlery holders made using the tutorial from this post http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=350855.0.

Here you can see the napkin-cutlery holder in action

Then it rolls up with a pretty ribbon to fit in the basket

The basket also contained a coordinating picnic blanket

I used a vinyl tablecloth for the back of the blanket so that it could stand up to grass and dirt

The process took a little more effort then I had anticipated. But I am pretty happy with how it turned out.

The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. . . . I would rather have cheese.

This is such a great idea!  I love the colors you chose, too.  Awesome job!
