Check out what I made for my son.  He is like the ultimate colts fan.   The other day he asked me if I could crochet him a  little colts helmet.  I told him I'd give it a try and this is what I came up with.

It is heavily starched so it holds its shape.  What do ya think?

Too cute, and I second the demand for closeups!

Here is a closer-up.   He likes the more vintage style helmets thats why its only a two bar.  Next one I try to make is gonna be the old leather style helmets.

I finally finished writing a pattern.  ugh.... I have never wrote a pattern before so I hope you get my what i'm saying.

I use a size 7 needle and size 10 thread
I have also used liquid starch and 2 vending machine capsules (like the kind the little plastic football helmets come in)

stitches used:  Sc-  single crochet,  Dc-  double crochet,  Hdc-  half double crochet,  Tc-  triple crochet
Hdcdec-  half double crochet  decrease

HELMET
R1/  ch 2,  6 sc in second chain from hook,  join.

R2/  ch 2,  hdc in same stitch ( 2 hdc around),  join.

R3/  ch 2,  2 hdc in next, (hdc in next, 2 hdc in next, around) join.

R4/  ch 2, hdc next, 2 hdc in next, ( hdc in next 2, 2 hdc in next, around),  join.

R5/  ch 2, hdc next 2, 2 hdc in next, ( hdc in next 3, 2 hdc in next, around), join.

R6/  ch 2,  hdc in next 3, 2 hdc in next, ( hdc in next 4, 2 hdc in next, around), join.

R7-9/  ch 2, hdc around, turn.

R10-11/  ch 2, hdc in next 30, turn.

R12/  ch 2, skip 1, hdc in next, hdc across to last two, hdcdec,  turn.

R13/  ch 2, hdc across, turn.

R14/  ch 2,  skip 1 hdc in next, hdc across to last two, hdcdec, turn.

R15/  ch 2, hdc across, turn.

R16/  ch 4,  TC next 2,  Dc next 3,  Hdc next 3,  Sc next 9,  Hdc in 3,  Dc in 3,  Tc last 3, turn.

R17/  ch 1, sc evenly spaces all the way around front side of helmet and down to the other side and join with a slip stitch in first sc.

fasten off and weave in ends.

MOUTH PIECE

R1/  ch 39,  sc in second ch from hook and across, turn.

R2/  ch 16, skip 16, Dc in next,  ch4, skip 4, dc in next,  ch 16 slip stitch in last, turn.

R3/  ch 1 sc across, slip stitch in last fasten off and weave in ends.

(if you just want the two-bar then omit the dc's and ch 39 again and slip stitch in last stitch)

Dip the unformed helmet and mouth piece in liquid starch.  Squeeze out excess.  Stretch helmet over vending machine capsule and use clothespins to hold in place until dry.
Place mouth piece at bottom edge of second capsule and use clothespins to hold in place.

I have included a couple of pics to help you understand what I mean

After helmet and mouthpiece are dry, I use fabric glue to attach mouthpiece to helmet.  Use clothespins to hold on until dry.

If you want the stripe down the back,  chain a length of chain a little smaller than back of helmet and sc across.  Use fabric glue to attach stripe.  Any other designs I just free form, I  chain a length of chain i need and glue it to helmet in the shape i want.
