handmade hats from upcycled fabric

I just recently discover Craftsterwhat an awesome web site! I am an eco designer and have a small business that focuses on making vintage reproduction clothing out of reclaimed fabrics (i.e. bed sheets, curtains, etc). So I was super excited when I heard about this challenge!

For the challenge I made myself a 1930s style dress with a matching cloche hat. I chose the 30s because I need a 30s/40s outfit for an upcoming eventso why not kill two birds with one stone. Wink The only problem was that up until now Ive only made 60s and 70s reproductions!

I have a large collection of vintage patterns, yet I didn't have any from the 30s or 40s. So I had to get creative!  I used McCalls 9187 pattern to make my dress. It is a 1968 pattern, but because of the dresss low waist, if done in the right fabric, has a 30s look. So I carefully selected the sheets to use for my dress. For the main part of the dress I chose an off-white, queen size, vintage bed sheet with an orange/brown floral print.  For the contrast on the dress (collar, front band, and belt) I used a twin size rusty orange bed sheet.

The finishing touch of the outfit was the cloche hat! I made the hat using a scrape of heavy weight rusty orange fabric I had laying around, and lined it with the floral print bed sheet fabric. The hat lining really pulls the two pieces together making a perfectly charming 30s outfit.

The wonderful husband took the fabulous photos of this outfitthanks honey!

It's lovely and the color completely suits you.  Well done in reworking a 60's pattern too!

This is such an adorable look! I love clothes with a vintage look to them, and the 30s were definitely an underrated decade, fashion-wise.  Wink You look great!

Loving it! Wonderful fabric choices. And yes, I think it really does look like a 30's dress. I have a thrift find 30's dress and although different in style, your dress reminded me of the one I have as soon as i saw it.

I had already voted, and just saw this today, such a nice choice of pattern to match to your bedsheet. You look wonderful and the photo shoot is great as well. Good job.

I have seen a few tutes on the web for a cloche hat as well, but yours is the perfect accessory to your dress.

drop waist dresses are more of a 20s thing in my head, but never the less this is an excellent use of materials and the colors and contrasts are very fetching!

What you have there is a beautiful 1920s dress (1960s and 1920s fashion is very similar, and it's no wonder since both eras were similar in terms of political changes with women's rights). In the 30s the waistline moved up to the natural waist or above, and the dresses became more shaped, often from bias cutting. They also did away with the cloche in terms of the latest fashions. The fabric is very 30s though, and the V neck as well. Maybe your dress would be smack dab on 1930?

Either way, very cute!
