Hi, my son (5 yo) got inspired to craft again and now we planned to make some traffic-lights and traffic-signs for him. I think we will make the signs out of cardboard and paint them (he likes to cut and paint). Now I need ideas for what to use for the base and the post. He suggested toothpicks, but I fear that they might be too thin and break too easily. Materials should be very cheap/free and preferably recycled (something we might already have at hand). I was thinking of doing the base from some kind of clay, but he doesn't like the idea (he's got an issue with how things feel).

(I hope this is the right place for this kind of question.)

I'll second the popsicles sticks, or how about drinking straws?
