Searching for my own "Golden Path"

View Profile WWW
« on: July 06, 2010 05:33:48 PM »

Ok, so i decided to take advantage of this challenge to work on a costume I have been planning for a while now. Her name is Anna Feng and she one of the Heros of the Steampunk book series The Hungry city Chronicles. After pouring over the novel for every shred of detail i could get on her costume i set to work designing this! I got all the bed sheets from thrift stores, all of which where whie save for the burgundy. The rest I had to dye. It was my first time dyeing anything so it took FOUR separate dyings to get the color i wanted. All of this is on my craft blog along with the rest of the creation process @ www.livejournal.com/users/plaid-boots I drafted my own patters, it was my first time making a pants pattern but I'm VERY happy with the result. I spent over 4 hours just doing decorative top stitching on the shirt pants jacket and Gaiters. the only items i did not make are the Hat, goggles, and Gloves.
The Pendent was custom made by my brother and inside carried a photo of a vintage African American aviator (as her boyfriend in the story, Khola is an African pilot!) I also made the hat pin out of an old necklace as her call sign is "The wind flower".

I hope you like! See more pictures and the whole creation process @ www.livejournal.com/users/plaid-boots

Happy Up-cycling!

Thank you so much for all the compliments. I was kind of worried I got to obscure with the character, but I'm happy it only makes you more interested in here! There have been some whispers about the internet that says Peter Jackson has expressed interested in making movies based on these books when he finished with the Hobbit. I wanted to make the costume before that happened so i could truly say it was completely my design and not influenced in anyway by (theoretic) movies.

I actually do wear the coat out. It's very light and comfy as it's made of bed sheets, and i live in Texas where it's hot. It's perfect for wearing over my club gear when i go out at night too~ <3

Holy crap, this is amazing! I would have never guessed it was made of sheets. I've read the books, really enjoyed them, and this was perfect! I never heard that Peter Jackson was interested though - that would be fabulous!

(But.. um.. it's Anna Fang. At least it was in my Canadian version!)

I'm glad you think the costume is fitting of the character. i really loved her and am glad you think i did her justice. i have a soft spot for strong females leads (as I'm fed up with the over sexual-azation of women in comics, and stories)

Also her Chinese name is Anna Feng, but they call her fAng in the west. It's only mentioned once in ths book i think. Everything calls her Fang, but it's actually Feng dose that make any sense? LOL "The Wind Flower FAng" if probably why everyone calls her Fang and not Feng. Ohhhh semantics LOL I only know all this because I play her in an RPG and spent like a month compiling data on her from the books. i have a whole notebook of character notes on her and other book characters i play in RPGs as its hard to look for a small detail in books, not like a show where i can just put the episode on where i need to reference something. I used every shred of notation on Anna's costume I had to design this as well heh -_-;> I have no life. LOL

Thanks you everyone for your words! I'm so glad you like it. I worked stupid hard on it, and I'm really proud of this project. It's going in my portfolio for sure.

Kenn> Thanks. I had originally hoped for a much darker richer color on the browns, but four batches of dye and this was the best I could coax out of it. haha. Thank you! I'm already making a whole bunch of gaiters just for fun to match my other clothes! their so funky to wear!

Strawloli> Thank you! The logo on the back is representing The Anti-Traction League in which Anna is a member of. They fight the Tractionist's cities, wanting to restore green the world to it's former beauty. We spend along of time debating what this should look like, so I'm so glad you like it!

Acbuiten> Thank you (i hope i do too hahah)

Wulf> Thank you. The striped gaiters was kind of an after thought. Originaly it was hideous cream and green stripes bed sheets i had in my stash, when i saw it i threw it into the dye bath with everything else hoping to find a use for it. And I did!
