this year i completed my first year of college and discovered that apparently girls at fancy private colleges in the south wear dresses for at least 50% of their college lives. i was grossly unprepared for this this year, so i've come home with a sewing vengeance, considering i'm a low-income student and can't really afford to buy dresses. =P plus it's just really fun to impress all the girls wearing the dresses daddy bought.

i finished my first dress of the summer a couple weeks ago and stalled posting it just because it's not completely finished. i haven't made it fully secure yet. it's a wrap dress and when the wind blows...it's a bit revealing. however, my dad had some leftover adhesive velcro from when he needed to attach carbon inserts to his shoes so i'll be adding some of that soon. for now, here are some pictures. =)

and a bit of a close-up.

i used broadcloth for the main body and printed calico for the tie. white bias tape for the edges because i hate hemming. pretty pleased with the result. and excited to wear it once that whole wind security problem is fixed. =P

enjoy.=)

Very nice!  You did a great job on it.  I'm sure all the girls from your college will be impressed!

The colors are beautiful and look great with your hair color and skin tone.  I love the pleats on the front and the bias tape actually seems to enhance the dress more than a plain hem would.

Did you use a pattern or come up with the dress design on your own?

Either way, great job!

That turned out so cute!  Much cuter then those store bought ones.  Did you use a pattern or wing it?  Id like to try my hand at one too, so any tips or tricks would be great. Cheesy

thanks, everyone. =)

i did use a pattern. mccall's 5878. this dress was view b. really easy to follow. it calls for interfacing to reinforce the hem of each side which i left out as well as 5 snaps to do away with the problem i have with keeping it together. =P i had never done snaps so i figured i'd try to do without. i'd recommend trying them anyway. =P

also, the sizes run a little small, but i don't think i would have made a bigger size. it's just kind of an odd fit, but once i positioned it correctly on myself it worked well.

i actually don't go to SCAD. =P not going the art/design school route. i go to vanderbilt university. i'm a pre-med. =P

I go to one of those fancy southern private schools, and am very familiar with this rich girl sundress phenomenon. Glad that you made some of your own! Don't feel like you have to be like all the preppy girls and wear frilly little dresses all the time, though!
Velcro was a smart choice.

Very flattering.  I understand what you mean about hemming.  It is of the devil.

Aww, that dress is adorable! I love the colors and fabrics you chose, and the bodice part is really flattering. I have the same wind problem when I make wrap skirts! I have been trying to make the pieces overlap more so that when the wind blows you just see the fabric layer underneath... but then it becomes more of a faux wrap skirt. I like your idea about the Velcro though!   Cheesy

Love this!!  I also think the bias tape looks nicer than a plain hem would.  It gives it a very crisp, almost retro feel.  Great job!!

Something about your color choice and pattern choice make that dress look like distilled sunshine.  You should be proud, and the other girls at your school will be jealous.

(Side note:  ARGH RICH SOUTHERN SCHOOL SUNDRESS PHENOMENON.  But I'm secretly happy because it gives me a chance to make sundresses.  =)  )

I love the color combination. I'm in the same boat with the poor college student thing, so I am starting to make my own clothes. And there's nothing better than wearing something that looks just as good if not better than what the "daddy's girls" wear. haha  Wink

Just a suggestion for the wind security issue ... try sewing a couple of little clear snaps along the  binding and onto the underlap of the skirt.  They will stay in place better than adhesive velcro when you wash the dress ... and it is a really cute dress! Smiley
