I am just wondering if anyone else is as mystified by things like a "crocheted vulva" or crotch embroidery as I am.  I just don't get it, and I can't imagine that I'm alone in this.  Please, someone tell me I'm not!

While it might be strange to some it is surely nothing new. Women ( and all their bits and pieces) have always been a subject of art, and now craft.  I suppose there is something captivating about it's mystery and now a revival and first and second wave feminism has women feeling proud enough to make genitalia art and craft. I'm not off to crochet myself a vagina but I surely see nothing wrong with it.

Well a vagina is ALOT more attractive to the eye than a penis. Hands down. If anyone does any art, crocheting OR any other craft I think we all would rather see a vagina. People take that more seriously. You look at any picture of a penis and you don't see any art in it....You are just waiting to see the joke or riddle that goes with it, followed by a held back giggle.

Damn that's so true. Ever seen male nude paintings? They totally freak me out and trust me I'm not easily startled, my mom's an oil painter Wink

I think when people see penis they think porno. It's the same reason why it's okay to see full frontal of a woman in the movies, but you rarely see a man totally nekkid. It's a force that can't always be controlled, while a vagina is something altogeather mysterious.

But being that the penis is something that "penetrates" people find it uncomfortable. If people were to do crafts of the penis one might think that person was a pervert.

I dunno.. I think the penis is pretty if represented correctly. In Japan, a turtle is a phallic symbol, and if you see a turtle with his head pointed up to the sky, it's supposed to be a penis. To me the head of a penis looks like a oompha loompha. But either way, I wouldn't mind seeing more penis art than vagina.

that's not all you find in japan...

actually, i wanted to write about a famous phallic sculpture made of stone, but i can't remember the name...  i do find it amusing how many products in japan are shaped somewhat manly, from salad dressing to these really strangely textured pencils...

just depends on what you grow up with and what you can get away with i suppose.

i do think the male figure as art has been overlooked for quite some time, perhaps it is due for a revival...

I think women are just trying to take back their body parts, their sexuality and the way that society views us... WE are NOT dirty WE do NOT smell bad, WE are NOT going to be defined by our component body parts and if we have to be reduced to body parts by god we'll do it on our own terms! Grin

I'm not bothered by classic male nudes because they at least represent the whole person and not just a sexual organ.  As far as frontal nudity goes, obviously the female variety is less obtrusive than the male, but with these crafts I've seen we're talking about not camera-view, but gynecologist-view!

i see alot of one sided opinions about the penis being ugly in comparison to the vag-   i guess being a boy and i see one everytime i shower. i would have to say a penis is much more attractive to look at (in art) compared to a vaginathat is if that is the focus of the peice unlike majority on the artworks that your prolly thinking of......

more on that if you were to take to close up pictures comparing the two subjects then decide with is more attractive

maybe its cause you are used to seeing whatcha got
