Look out, Portland. I'm so indie.

I'm teaching a 13-year-old from my church to sew and she picked out this pattern as the dress she wanted to make. I decided to make it ahead of time so that when it came to helping her with the pattern, I'd know exactly what the pattern meant. I'm glad I did because I had a few confusing moments in deciphering the instructions. I used an inexpensive black gingham from Joann fabrics.

I've actually lost 10lbs since I took my measurements for this dress, plus the wearing ease ran big anyway so it needs to be taken in about 2 inches on either side of the bust to fit properly. Its super comfy though, and I love the pockets.

My pupil has picked out a black eyelet to make her version out of, its going to be super cute.

Thanks for looking.

This is a cute dress especially with the gingham. I need to make me a gingham dress.  You have just inspired me.  Thanks so much and GOD bless your efforts in teaching the teen to sew.

What a great dress! It looks like it fits you very well from the pictures and the gingham suits you very well Grin I think it's genius how you put the under-bust strip at a diagonal. Good luck with teaching the young girl to sew and I'd love to see her results if she allows you to post it up on Craftster!

I must admit I didn't read all the posts to your thread so forgive me if this suggestion is a repeat:

If your young friend is making her dress out of the black eyelet, don't line it. Instead make a simple cotton slip in different bright colours that she can wear under it and it can peek through the holes of the eyelet! changes the dress everytime she wears it!

Love your dress, sending the link of your post to my daughter to give her a hit to make this pattern!

That's such a cute dress, and you have no idea how much I applaud your efforts to teach someone to sew.  I've mostly been muddling along on my own (with the help of the internet), and I think it's great that this girl will have a teacher like you.

Looks good - love the fabric.  I've always been scared of gingham in case you have a mess on with matching squares.  Was it difficult ?  Especially as you also had the under bust part at a different angle.

Cheers

Yes, I am stalking the Toys and Playthings board. Thanks for noticing!
I'm cheating on Craftster with Pinterest. It's ok though. There's overlap.
