Hi all! I just made this quilt for my partner in the Be Awsome Swap. It's based off of one on her wists from Oh Fransson!
http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2010/03/classes-at-modern-domestic.htmlThat one is baby sized (and I think meant to be made from charm squares), and I wanted this one to be bigger, so I increased the size of the blocks in the strips and the width of everything to get it to a better size for a lap quilt. It's approximately 62.5 inches x 42 inches (that is what my pre-quilting math worked out to...I didn't measure the finished quilt though lol!

Fabric:
~Approximately 10 coordinating Fat Quarters, cut into 6 inch strips. (You can use less but I'm not trying to figure out the math of how many you would use. I had some fabric left over).
~3/4 yard solid neutral fabric for sashing
~2 1/2 yards of 60 inch wide fabric, or equivalent amount of 42 inch width (you'll have to piece the backing a little bit if using the smaller width)
~1/2 yard contrasting/matching fabric for binding
7 pieced strips, 6 inches by 42 inches:
~After cutting the FQ's into squares and rectangles, piece them by alternating one 6 x 6 inch square with one 6 x 3 inch rectangle. You will use 5 squares and 6 rectangles per strip. I alternated starting with a square and starting with a rectangle so the finished quilt woudln't be quite so lined up, but that made some strips end with two rectangles in a row, which I didn't really love. You could reduce the length of each strip by 3 inches to combat that I suppose. Press all the seams in the same directions
* I tried to use at least one piece of each fabric in each strip, and tried to vary it as much as possible but didn't over think it. After they were done I laid them out and rearranged them a few times until I got the final layout I wanted.
For the sashing:
~From the neutral/solid cut:
(6) strips 3 inches by 42 inches (width of fabric)
(2) strips 4.5 inches by 42 inches (width of fabric)
Alternate the pieced strips with the sashing strips, putting the wider strips of sashing on the left and right ends.
Pin and baste as you like.
For the quilting I quilted on the side of each vertical seam (almost 1/2 inch....I used the width of my walking foot to measure!) Then I turned and used tape to space out straight lines approximately 2.5 inches apart and quilted the width of the quilt.
Fabrics:
Fat quarters are Michael Miller Flora and Fauna, Michael Miller Poppy (by Laura Gunna), Michael Miller hedgehogs (the stripey fabric), and a couple from Joann's. The sashing is from Joann's, the backing is Amy Butler and the binding is also from Joann's.
