I'm new to swapping, and trying to figure out how best to provide helpful information to my partners, and how best to interpret their tastes.  So I'm curious...do you add something to your wists only if it is exactly the way you would want it?  (The colors/fabric used are to your taste, along with the overall design of the item, etc.)  Or do you add to your wists anything that has a significant element that you really like?  (For instance, if you really like a purse someone posted, because of the general style, but if you made it for yourself, you'd use a different color.)

Just wondering if there is a "typical" way that people use wists.

I add the item and then use the note section to explain what I like, or dislike.

I would love to swap for things kids could do in the car on a long car trip (3 girls ages 5-12). I can knit, crochet or trade yarn.

I do the same as styupe. I wist something and then make notes about colors or size in the note section. Smiley

There are people who will wist fabrics just so their partners can get a feel for patterns and color combos. I've also seen big items like furniture and kitchen accessories in wists.

Basically, just let your wist be a window to what you like!

Not exact - I know I add stuff to my wists sometimes because I like the concept of it, and will add a note about what I like about it, sometimes to add some guidance for someone stalking me.  Right now I have two pages of fabrics on my wists - not so much that I want the fabric, but it helps to give an idea of what kind of patterns appeal to me.  I have a cup design on there that I like, but I don't necessarily like it as a cup, but would love the concept interpreted as a planter, etc.

I use other wists the same way - maybe I see a piece of jewelry on someone's wist, and it gives me an idea of how to make my own version of it.

I do the same. If I'm in a swap with a specific theme I do try to add relevant items to my wist. For example, for the Sea Life swap I hunted down some specific sea-themed goodies that I really liked so my partner had some ideas to start with.

I also think wists can be helpful in just getting a general feel for the style and taste of your partner. So while you may not copy something from their wists exactly, you might learn that they like country themed items with roses on them (or something).

Troublet, I like the idea of adding fabrics. I'm going to do that Smiley.

I do the same as a lot of people above, as far as adding notes and wisting fabric and whatnot!

Also, if I find something I want to make for myself or I want to make for someone (I don't want it made for me) I set it to "private" so nobody else will see it and want to make it. Same for stuff I've already received and don't want to get copies of (but still want to leave on there for inspiration or reference or whatever)

I did not know there was that option!  Good to know that I can use the wist system as a personal to-do list too!

Yep, it's a little check box near each item I believe! Very handy, especially when you're adding something from a swap partner's wist that you want to make for them (but don't necessarily want someone to make for you!)

Can I bump this thread?

I'm having issues with the Wists website. I have the two Wists buttons in my favourites since I started using it. I can still access the 'Go to my Wists' page, but the 'Add to my Wists' button acts up.

When I first started using the program, I quickly discovered that I sort of had to cheat. Normally I would click the 'Add' button, and a whole page of pictures would show up. I clicked the one I liked, tagged it, and there I was. I then found that out of ten tries, 9 times, the Wists website picked the wrong picture. Fair enough, I stared using a little trick. I would copy the picture's URL in a new window, and Wist it there. Often losing the pattern that would normally be linked to the process as well, alas...

Now it has become impossible to Wist anything in a new window. When I do this, and click the 'Add' button, nothing changes. I can still Wist stuff when I hit the 'Add' button on the original page, but the same problem as before occurs, and I wist things I do not want... It's driving me insane, because I love to swap and I know how useful these Wists can be. Mine is far from up to date...

Any thoughts?

I second switching to Pinterest! Smiley

So much more visually pleasing, IMO. And you can group things in "boards" - so if you have a swap you signed up for, you can create a board just for that swap and add things based on that, which I LOVE.

You two might want to mention Pinterest isn't open for new signups, so it would be hard to switch  Wink I tried to sign up and was put on a waiting list.

They add you pretty quickly once you're on the waiting list, and if you can get an invite from someone you know it's even faster. I have a few invites left if anyones wants to pm me their email addy.
