-A challenge to recycle as many bits and pieces as possible in one project.
-Naming a useful item, e.g something to hold your toiletries, a piece of art for a wall, a piece of jewellery, using entirely recycled materials. Would be interesting to see how different people take the theme, although this is somewhat similar to the general craftster challenges.....

Being new, I'm not sure when this challenge is going to happen, but if soon, how about crafting something a college freshman would find useful, and if later, how about crafting a Halloween costume from recycled materials?

I like the packaging idea. So many things come in sturdy packages that seem to BEG for up/recycling. Cat litter containers are one. Some of those squared buckets are hardcore, and I absolutely hate tossing them out.  But what to do with them?

How about unused pages from jotter books ?
At the end of the school term, kids always have left over pages in their exercise books.
It'll be great to gather them together into a new jotter book.

I'd like to create artist books from my junk mail. I keep collecting it with that intent, but then end up sending it to the Abitibi paper recycling box at the school.

Maybe an idea involving bathroom plastics?  I'm thinking, deodorant containers, shampoo bottles, disposable razors, plastic toothbrushes...  I can't seem to think of anything useful to do with any of those things, and it seems like something that almost everyone would have some of.

I like the bathroom plastics and something from packaging!

I have an idea to add what about old phone books? most people have them lying around and who uses them anyway when you can look stuff up on the internet?  All of those yellow pages might make nice flowers or something! maybe they'd be good to paper mache something with?

I was thinking... rather than a challenge where everyone used the same materials what if we all made a certain item?

Like:
a Madonna challenge: use stuff to make something (not just clothes) that an 80s madonna fan would love!
a glasses challenge: make things into the shape of a pair of glasses, or funktafy an old pair of glasses!
a bra challenge: make a bra out of who knows what!
a cozy challenge: make a ______ cozy out of crazy crap!
a laptop sleeve challenge: make something to cover your laptop and pad it will that green plastic easter grass!

just trying to brainstorm some interesting things, lol
I am still thinking about the Madonna one tho, I may have to try it Smiley

peace yo

oh, I only wish you lived near me!  I could use them to put my entire veggie garden in come spring.  But, more seriously, take them to your local daycare centers.  they use them for storing blocks, toys, socks, mittens, anything at all!

What about an open challenge where the only stipulation is the main item MUST be found on the side of the road? At the dump wouldn't count.

Spring cleaning is coming up in about 2 months in my town. LOTS of amazing things to be found on the side of the road during large-item-pickup week.

Eco Friendly craft tags/shipping tags!

Today I thought Id share a little tutorial with you all. I need tags for my craft, as everything cost money and crafting should be fun, not something to burden you personal finances. I looked around if I could buy customized shipping tags, but it would be expensive in the long run, also not eco friendly.  I took the decision to make my own tags without spending "mucho dinero" and save the environment while doing it!

1.  Materials
               Cutting equipments
Woven heavy fusible interfacing, cost about 8$/m (I used about 20x40 cm)
               Small pieces of fabric leftovers
               Rubber stamp and ink pad
               Puncher
               Paper string or elastic string

Hi! This is my first post evarrr!
I got a promotional Pabst toothbrush at a show a while back, it wasn't anything spectacular a lot like the kind you get from going to the dentist cheapy thing that says Pabst Blue Ribbon on it. Anyways, I boiled it filed off the bristles and shaped it into a bracelet. Its pretty nifty and people seem to enjoy that it used to be a toothbrush if only for the fact that it shows my love for PBR. LOL! Now what to do with this six pack ring...

That's an idea. I like the making stuff out of packaging idea, too.
Or, how about making art? Made out of stuff that would normally be thrown away? Not necessarily a piece to hang on the wall. Sculpture would work, heck, anything that could be called art.
Or a spring themed challenge? Stuff for a garden?

Hubcaps!
They Are EVERYWHERE!!!!...must be because of those nasty potholes nearby.
I started picking them up and hanging them from the branches on a nearby tree. Now, it looks funny...must post a pic  Grin

They have cool swirly things on them. It would be kinda neat as a stepping stone or something, hmm...

Why don't we have a challenge using plastic grocery bags. I saw a great episode of Sesame St. where they washed the bags, cut them into strips and then wove beautiful totes. I think that many neat things could be made using this technique.

Ideas??

How about something using those styrofoam meat trays that can't be recycled...that bugs me. - just venting.

We use these as paint pots. Some of our fruits and veggies come on these as well so we end up with a bunch. You can just let the left over paint dry and it looks pretty neat Smiley

I love so many of the suggestions in this thread!

1.Make holiday decorations. Ornaments, bunting, a wreath, wrapping paper, ect.
2.Make something from packaging. Soo much plastic and cardboard that accumulates!
3. Paper. Make whatever you like, but use junk mail, old phone books, ect.
4. After the holidays-use all the ripped up wrapping paper, ribbons, boxes, ect. to create something.

A year or two back I was in a swap where we made wind chimes from unusual materials. It was so cool seeing what everyone came up with! So, in the spring, maybe a wind chime/garden/outdoors items recycled challenge? That would be terrific. Flowerpots and seed starters, windchimes and decor, practical or purely decorative items.

I was thinking as I was commuting this weekend - what about holiday goods/ornaments/packaging made from things transport-related - old tickets stubs, tansit cards, transfers, transit maps, parking stubs, things like that?  Some of them have great graphics, and they are often miscellany that gets tossed in a pretty short period of time - and usually not very festive - it would be neat to make them the base of something holiday related.
