Help! I need to buy or make something for my dad for Father's Day, but he's so unusual that ties such just won't do.

My dad has always been hard to buy for since his interests change so quickly. Sometimes it's fishing. Sometimes it's learning to play the guitar. Sometimes it's the Civil War. This year, his big thing is that he and my mom (50's) are trying to figure out a way to retire (Dad's a trailer mechanic) and start an online antique clock store. Then they want to buy a bunch of acreage so that they, my husband and I and my sister and her family can all live on a communal homestead. That sounds pretty outlandish, but my parents already live on a little acreage. Whatever 'homesteading' skills he doesn't already have and use, he can easily look up in his myriad of books and dvds on the subject.

In light of all that information, what should I get/make him for Father's Day? I want to spend $50 or less, since money is kind of tight.

Thanks for the help!

This may be kinda boring, but my dad always likes to have a large outdoor thermometer and a rain gauge that he can see from inside the house.  Kinda home-stead-y?

Hey, that's my dream too!  Nice!  I made my friend a country-sytle classic cross-stitch, with "Homestead Sweet Homestead", it would also look good as a woodburned plaque.  Thing about homesteading is that most everything is recycled stuff or made from natural materials.  Perhaps you could peek at some of the books and get a head start?  Like making him a useful item from one of them.  I'd tell ya where to begin but the options are endless.  Home-made rain barrel? Compost buckets? A sign to hang on an outhouse?
