That is the sexiest bookshelf I've ever seen!  I'm so Jealous.  All my books are in boxes because I can never find bookcases at thrift stores and I'm not about to drop over a hundred bucks on a cheaply made particle board one at a box store.  You did a beautiful job on yours and congrats on your awesome find!

It came without the backing?!  I have a case without the backing and I have no idea what to ask for to buy some.  The men at the hardware store looked at me like I was nuts when I tried to explain!  What IS it called?!  Because I totally want to pimp mine out now!

Back board maybe? I have no idea. But mine came with one.

That's what I called it, but they looked at me like I was an idiot!  Oh, well!

I have a really nice Fontana Broyhill dresser with mirror but this would work so much better for me if I removed the mirror and added a book case! I'm planning on painting my set silver even though they still sell the set in the Broyhill stores. It's super popular but I'm just tired with it after 20 years. It's sturdy and good quality, so if I painted silver the book case and dresser to math the book case could be another brand as long as it is the same length. I have so many shoes and the fancy ones would look cute on display in the cubbies!

Thanks so much for posting!

Try asking about chipboard. Obviously the thinner versions so it's lighter weight and easy to nail down to the piece, but they might have an idea of what you're talking about at the store.

BTW, I love the OPs finished piece. Smiley It looks so elegant and pretty.

Ask for MDF, or at least that's what it's called in Australia. It's like chipboard, but much finer pieces in it so it's not so flakey. You can also get it much thinner.

Backing board is the same thing. You could also use peg board (you know the stuff with lots of holes used in garages to organise tools) or masonite.

They mustn't have been very helpful if you asked for backing board for a bookshelf and they didn't know what you were talking about!
