I live in Winnipeg, Canada, and you can't find safety eyes that are smaller than grapefruits (a little exaggeration! lol) anywhere! And I want some right now for a poppet that Ilianora (craftster and friend that lives close by! YAY!) convinced me to start making last night! Anyhow, here's what I came up with and IT WORKS! I'm so happy that it works! And they look pretty good, too!

So first off, take a short screw (less than half an inch would be best), and some polymer clay (a random colour that you won't see, the eye colour of your choice, and black for a pupil).

Now, take the random colour, and the screw and take the random colour and roll it into a little ball. Screw it carefully to the screw. Don't move it around a lot as you don't want to ruin the threading that you're creating for yourself. Then just as carefully, unscrew it and place it gently (without squishing it) on your baking tray. Make two of these.

Sorry the pic is blurry. I dropped my camera (don't worry, I've only spent around $1800 on this camera - no biggie lol) on the ground.

Then take your eye colour choice and mold it into a ball and form it around the top of the screw. Secure it well. Add the pupil (you could paint this on if you wanted, and add a white catch light, which would be cute, too).

Bake the clay according to its directions. Once it's cooled, you can put it on your toy. The screw will screw into the fabric, and once it's through, you can screw on the backing you made with your random colour. Et voila! Your handmade safety eyes!

I don't think you should give these to babies (they seem really safe and sturdy, but not worth the chance!), but for kids three and over and adults, it works fine!!

Very cool! I can't seem to find any safety eyes where I am, either, but we have plenty of screws in the tool box. Thanks for the tutorial!

I am surprised that you can find any safety eyes (grapefruit sized or not)...
I for the life of me cannot find any.
Anyways, they look really awesome!
(I can't wait to see your finished product)

awesomeness. I also live in canada and while i can find the most lovely and weird safety eyes in a little craft shop up the road, but they're plastic so i can't rub off paint to customize.

Cool idea. I bought a bunch of safety eyes on ebay a while ago because I also live in Canada and couldn't find any anywhere. This is cool though cause they're custom. Brilliant.
