This is wonderful! Cedar or pine shavings work great for the inside, or even straw.

We have a new stray cat outside with no place to stay. I filled my cats old plastic carrier 1/4 full of cedar shavings and she sleeps in it. I hate that it has those airholes around the top to let in cold. I would love to build her something like this!

That's the sweetest idea! I did a makeshift one for a kitty that was lurking around my mom's house, but it was during summer/fall, so warmth wasn't such an issue, and we found the kitty a home before winter.
One thing to keep in mind, based on my sister in law's experience (we're a family of big ol' softies, apparently) - keep a regular eye on  the house. She had a family of very mean opossums move in, and she (or rather, my brother) had a heck of a time getting them out. Had to tear down the little house!

Yeah for recycling and giving wayward kitties a place to stay dry and out of the elements.
