My boyfriend has an equal love for both Chess and the Lakers (hopefully they'll win the Finals again this year, or I'll be dealing with quite an unhappy fan!), so when I thought combining the two would be a perfect option for both this challenge and a random gift!
While searching for a random chess set I could modify from various thrift stores in the area, I came across a set that, while disturbing, gave me the idea to make each piece represent each player instead of simply the team colors. I didn't take any before pictures
but I still had the original box.
The pieces were in about the same condition as this box - scratched, felt all or nearly removed....
With disturbing faces that (supposedly) looked like they were carved.
The original pieces were 'wood grain (plastic)' and creamy white-ish that was disgusting all together. According to the box this set was made in 1957, so that likely explains the condition (and I apologize if I've destroyed a valuable antique!)
So, I did some research, and the purple 'team' is the Lakers' players as they stood in the 2009 championships, and the gold 'team' is what sports critics have dubbed the best Lakers' players of all time - Kareem, Worthy, Magic, and the like.
I spray painted each piece in solid purple/gold, and did the same for the purple on the board. I then hand painted each chess square, jersey number, and face based on google searches. Following that, I re-felted all of the bottoms with matching felt, and I will seal each piece after I find a sealant that I'm sure won't instantly destroy what I've painted.....

(Yes, I know Gasol is wearing a necklace....I had to work with what I was given!
