Pretty Pirate Hat!

I attend renaissance fairs all throughout the summer, and love going as a pirate. Hey, pirates have more fun. This year, I wanted a pirate hat-tricorn, but everything was sooo expensive. So I decided to take my hand at making my own.

I took a regular black straw sunhat, flipped up the sides and back, and sewed them in place, thus making the tricorn shape.  Then I added the ruffled trim, braided trim, flower, pearls, etc.  It looks girly, but goes perfectly with my girly pirate outfit







Up next is to attempt to make an Elizabethan tall hat, for my Elizabethan gown that I have yet to make! I'm currently trying to find some sort of base to start with. Either a felt/cardboard top hat, but with a shorter crown and smaller brim.

I gotta tell you, when I saw the thumbnail of this on the front page I thought it was a cake! But finding out it was a PIRATE HAT was so much better! Aisy is right, making this out of an ordinary straw hat was pure genius, and on top of that your decoration is pure piratical perfection. It really is display-window gorgeous. Please can we see you in your whole girly pirate outfit?

I can hardly wait for the Elizabethan hat! If you find a suitable felt top hat, you should be able to cut it down to the shape you want. The brim is almost always sewn on separately, which means you can remove it, cut the body down to the right height, and sew the brim back on. You just have to watch that the sides of the hat body are parallel (they are in most styles) or the size will change when you cut it back. The brim can be narrowed simply by removing the edge banding and wire if there is one, trimming the felt to size, and sewing the tape back on. This will usually work for a straight-sided straw hat too, if you find one.

Aisy-it's a sun hat with a circular brim, I don't think I've ever seen one with a rectangular brim.  So if you are going to make one, make sure it is circular!

And Wulf-I would love to show you the outfit-when it is finished.  Currently the pieces for the bodice are cut out and sewn, I have to order the boning and set the grommets in for the back and side lacing.  I'm probably going to either make a pair of short wrap pants that I can tuck into my pirate boots, or a skirt. I'm thinking a skirt, since I'm going with the whole pretty pirate theme
