I made this for my partner, thisbirdsabsurd, in the Be Awesome Swap. She and I had very similar tastes, and when I saw something like this on her wist, I had to give it a try.

I pretty much went into it blindly, not thinking of what supplies I would need and what I would need to do to make things work out. Fortunately, I had some help. I sent the link of the wists to Stifflersmom, who told me she had the perfect box and would send it to me immediately. The box makes it, I swear! Stiffly sent me this aged box, once used for cheese, and it is perfect. I don't think I could have done it without it.

Anyway, the head is polymer clay, the body is sewn and stuffed from some fabric I had in my stash. I also had the buttons and the old keys. alwaysinmyroom had some lovely rusty hinges that she was kind enough to mail me. What perfect wings! This was how the doll looked for quite some time. (The colors are truest in this photo.)

So, feet and legs. What to do about them? Here's the photo from thisbirdsabsurd's wist:

I would have loved to be able to use those old shoe forms, but after watching ebay for a couple of weeks, I decided that was just going to be too pricey. I tried aging old baby shoes that I purchased from the thrift store, but then there was the issue of balance and support. I really wanted him to be able to stand. My husband, Mr. 'Coo, suggested I carve a couple of blocks of wood on his belt sander. I had never used the belt sander before, but desperate times call for desperate measures! It turned out to be easier than I thought. I carved out two rough little shoes, and then stained and distressed them a bit. For legs, I used two rusty old bolts that my daughter, BananaAmbush, found in the sculpture studio of her college. She also donated the rusty little clover/crown that's now on his head.

And, here he is. I have to say I love him. More than the way he looks, though, I love that so many parts from so many different Craftsters went into the making of him.

I hope you like him too.  Smiley

I love him racky!  So wonderfully done, and nice to see him come together from pieces sent from afar!  I love when art gets to be collaborative.  And btw, I love the feet!  More fun than the ones on the wist, by far.   Kiss
