I've been working on this pillow for about two weeks now.  Many, many hours a day!  My husband is currently out of town, and I wanted to have this as a surprise when he came back.

We've lived in Italy for the last three years and are moving back home to Texas in just a few weeks.  I wanted to do something to commemorate our time here so decided to embroider some of the sites we've seen (really, just the ones I could draw haha).  I also embroidered all the countries we've visited along the top and bottom.

The Eiffel Tower is in the middle, and here's everything else counter-clockwise: a castle modeled after Neuschwanstein Castle (incomplete--I need to do something else to that one), the Great Pyramids of Giza (with a tiny camel I love!), Venice, Milan Duomo, the Colosseum, and the Dolomites where we live.

I took these before I had added the red around the piping:

The "snow" on the mountain is two strands of light brown and two strands of white.  That way I can see the top from far away but it still looks a bit like snow.

Any suggestions on how to make the Venice and castle ones look better?  They are the only ones I'm not happy with.

I wish my pictures better showed my stitching!

After I finished the front I was not at all satisfied.  I thought it looked kind of cheap and like I had just thrown on a few bad sketches.  I wanted it to show how much work I had actually put into this!  Ideally I could have sewn a pillow myself, using a red patterned fabric as the back, but I don't sew right now and really hate leaving projects unfinished. So I decided to fill up the back with something else!

And now I am actually liking the back more than the front!

Photos from before I had added the inner two:

I'm SO sorry this is so photo heavy!  I'm just very happy with my designs and stitching so far Smiley

Now do you guys think I should do anything else?  I wasn't planning on the "lazy daisy" row being the last, but the flowers ended up bigger than I had anticipated so that I think going further might look strange.  But maybe not!  I am thinking of embroidering some sort of picture on the inside.  Or maybe our last name or the dates of our travels/time here.

And do you think I should add another border to the front?  I would do it pretty close to the piping (where the red border is already) but can't decide on colors or stitches.

Soo pretty! I can guess where you're at... lol. Got back from 3 years there myself a couple years back. Tongue For Venice I was going to suggest the Rialto but with the Campagnile already in the pic, it would be a weird placement... lol. Mebbe the two pillars as you enter the Piazza? or a little gelato stand... lol. Oh... and it needs pigeons. *nods* And maybe some windows for Neuschwanstein? or the lake in the background? Cheesy

This is so adorable. <3

Thanks!  I actually had two different drawings before I decided on the Venice scene: one was of the Rialto and the other was a gondola.  But then I decided I really didn't want something touristy on this.  I love Venice (and live only an hour away), but it can be a hellhole and tourist trap in some places!  I wanted to capture what I find so beautiful--the candy-colored buildings.  It looked great in drawings but just didn't translate well to thread Sad

My problem is exactly that--the windows!  On both the castle and the Venice scene I tried using about four different colors for windows and just couldn't get it right.  I'm thinking for the castle I might just add some french knots in a few places.  I think I might also add some trees to the other side.  I didn't even think of a lake, though!  That could be great!

I love it just as it is - it looks exactly like the retro embroidery transfer sheets I lust over online Smiley You initials and dates would be OK on the back but I honestly don't think it needs anything except castl windows. Fabulous job!

Love this! My husband and I lived and worked in Japan and did a lot of traveling when we were there. I would love to make something like this for us...but first I'd have to learn to embroider  Huh

This is beautiful! And really, I don't think you need to do anything to the Venice or Castle, they look good to me. I'll be hitting "This Rocks!"
