I made a patchwork shoulder bag as a spur-of-the-moment, last-minute gift for a friend. I started with nothing but a pile of fabrics and my tools. No pattern or tutorial, just an idea.

It features a patchwork outer, a lining with two pockets, a flat bottom, a flap with button closure, and an adjustable strap. Though time-consuming, it was easy, which made me realize how much I've learned about sewing and bag construction over the last year.

The patchwork sucked up the morning and a chunk of the afternoon---the planning, measuring, cutting, piecing, pressing of the front, back, sides, pocket, flap, and strap pieces.

It was only thanks to Hubby's willingness to wrangle children that I managed to complete most of the bag in a day. It took the full day, though.

I was up very, very late finishing it, but it was worth it. She loved it!

Wow! What a great friend you are, love this bag. The purple patchwork is so pretty. The patchwork pocket is so cute. Thank God for supportive husbands, right?
