Tips and Tricks for Craft Rooms!
«
on:
May 30, 2010 04:39:56 PM »
Okay, so we all have one or dream of one, so let's exchange some ideas about setting up and decorating craft rooms!
For me, I am merely counting down the months until a roommate moves out and I can have my own real craft room instead of the corner of the
dungeon
basement I currently use.
Here is my inspiration board that I very quickly put together using the very fancy amenities of Microsoft Paint:
I have the vintage drafting table, the dress form, and am looking for some of the other items, but would love to see what other people use!
What ideas do you all have out there? I am looking for organizational or aesthetic ideas!

I think that Melissa from Yummy Goods has
the most amazing studio
.
My favorite part is the cantaloupe-colored walls and the shelves arranged by color.
You seriously need to click the link and look at all the pictures. It's
so cool
.
I'll hopefully come back with some more stuff later; this is just the first thing I could think of off the top of my head.

so jealous of the amount of space she has, I love it, love the idea of decorating by colour like that, *filing it away in the back of my head*

fabric folding is the only way to go, I talked about it here in my craft room post
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=294579.msg3351315#msg3351315
it has stayed neat like this for over a year now. it took me so long to get it done like this in the first place that I pretty much always get it back to this state when I can.
One thing I have added and use a lot is a magnetic knife holder strip, screwed to the edge of the shelf within arms reach of where I work, it holds all of the pliers and other small tools right where I can see them and can reach them.
Having rolls of tape on a dowel as in the above pic also works well as it means they are less likely to wander to other parts of the house.

I wish I could be as organized. I am moving soon so perhaps my new place will look as good as hers
but i will only have half a bedroom so it wont be as spacious :/ I have seen some really cool spaces on flickr.

I use a metal silverware/napkin caddy for scissors, rotary cutters, pens and pencils, small rulers, needle books and other small misc. hand tools needed for sewing. I'll post a pic of mine later, but this is the idea:
I got mine at Joann in the summer clearance a few years ago. Cheap, cheap. I also have a roll of paper hanging on a curtain rod, similar to the tape on a dowel theory, it's always there and out of the way. I just use my acrylic ruler to tear off a piece as needed.

I back with more stuff. Here's a quick inspiration board I threw together of things I'd
love
to have in a craft room:
The "craft room" tag is very helpful.

Oooo I just finished my craft room! It took a few extra days because my sweet bf dumped a whole gallon of paint on the carpet (it's a rental too!!) but we found something to get it out. I will post pictures soon. I didn't have much $$ and I can't work around a lot of clutter. I went to the Dollar store and got some pretty bins to store things and I have plastic shoe storage boxes ($2 at walmart) for big stuff (I have one for knitting, one for needlework, one for paint...) I also used my deep freezer as my cutting/ironing table! For fabric I used bins too.
