Orange Floral "Monstrosity" needs some love!

Golden rule reinforced while making this dress: do NOT sew while tired!! What a week of disasters!

Cut out the pattern (New Look 6723)  - good
Sew front/back to side pieces - bad
Unpick and re-sew - good
Cut lining - wrong (waste of lots of fabric)
Sew lining front/back to side pieces - bad
Unpick and re-sew - good
Sew lining to outside fabric - bad
Unpick and re-sew - good
Sew skirt to bodice - good
Try dress on dressform - good
Notice skirt is see-through - bad
Buy more fabric for lining - bad
Unpick skirt, attach lining - good
Re-attach skirt to bodice - good
Sew zip - wonky but good
sew hem - good
Try dress - Finally PERFECT!!!













I would love to hear everyones comments, I showed a few friends and the response was less than complimentary. I love it though, it feels so summery. So middle fingers up to my friends - I'm wearing it anyway!!

I think it looks great. I love the fabric and the cut of the dress. I had to laugh at your run-down of sewing it, it sounds much like my own disasters. It turned out awesome so tell your friends their just jealous, it looks great and you look great in it and you made it yourself so it's even better! Anyone can go and buy a dress, but to make one is a whole different ball game. Good job.

Well, I think it is lovely. I love the colors on you, and the skirt length is great to show off your legs! If you wanted to dress it up a bit, a wide black belt would look gorgeous with it!

Oooh! I LOVE it! Not everyone could pull that print off, but both that gorgeous orange and the cut of the dress look GREAT on you! You should definitely be proud! I second the suggestion of whoever said a belt might be fun too.  I wish I had your dress-making skills and I bet your friends do too

What Your friends don't like?  They are crazy.  It looks great on, and I love the fabric.  I love it with the pumps, but could totally see this with some strappy sandals!  Looks awesome, and you look great wearing it!  I agree with Nataluna, they have to be jealous.

I think it's both a good choice of fabric and of the pattern, because not anybody can wear a fabric with such a large-scale print. You have to be tall and feminine built so I am a bit jealous, ´cause I am to small for these kind of prints!

i have to agree. the dress is great and looks great on you. and now, because you already know how to handle the pattern (or what's better not to do) i'm sure you could skip a few steps for the next one

What a cheery flattering dress! The nipping in of the waist makes you have such nice curves without being clingy.

My take on the friend situation: (going by your username) While it's got a very retro feel, it's not really a psychobilly print, so it may just be out of character. I know I'd get funny looks from my friends when I would show up at shows still in my khakis and pink workwear, it's probably just not their style.
Doesn't mean it's not an awesome dress. Which it is.

Also, are your shoes in your icon from Iron Fist?? So jealous.

honey it's sooooo DARLING! I can see it paired with big orange and yellow flowers in your pretty hair! Here's just a thought, maybe save some time by using a slip instead of a lining? I often have that debate with myself...do i put in a lining or just wear a slip underneath?

That dress is gorgeous!! The fabric is absolutely fabulous (not to mention that you look GREAT in orange ). Also I love the bodice of the dress. I don't really know what its called, but its so cute and vintage. Great stuff!

In answer to a few questions:
orange is not my usual colour, I'm normally in black, so maybe that did have something to do with my friend's reactions
Yes, my shoes are the Zombie Stompers from Iron Fist... I love them but don't get many chances to wear them (should just wear them shopping or around the house haha)
Sue, I never actually thought of wearing a slip instead of making lining! I guess that happens late at night, my brain doesn't function properly!

I am jealous of your skills. If I had made it I would have made a lower neck line, but that is because my chin would take over if I didn't. I love the color and think you should definitely wear it outside. Great job. I lol'd at the invisible skirt part. Your determination is amazing.
