This past December I suffered a near fatal heart attack due to a completely blocked artery.
I had to have a plastic bit inserted into my heart and then had to spend a bit of time in the hospital.
I am completely recovered now and back to riding my bike many miles a week so all is good on my end.

Recently I have been thinking about my experience and how scared I was while I was in the hospital. The one thing that  gave me comfort was a stuffed dog that my 4 year old granddaughter brought me.

Now if I was that scared how scary must it be to be a little kid in the children's cardiac care unit?Huh

I thought maybe I could make something for the kids that would be comforting. Does anyone have any ideas other than stuffed animals and blankets? I am open to anything.

And does anyone have any experience with donating handmade goods to a hospital? Who do I contact?

Any and all ideas or help will be greatly appreciated.

I would look online at your local hospital. They usually have a volunteer section or just call the general switchboard and ask them who to talk to.

I'm glad you're better!

What kittykill said, and also check with the Hospital Auxiliary (if it exists), Ronald McDonald House (if there is one locally), or other charities that already exist locally.

Even the hospital gift shop might have some ideas.

These aren't necessarily crafty ideas but other things that bring comfort are small games, books, and videos, and there is currently a big push to give kids in hospitals access to laptops and the internet to keep them in contact with their friends and family.  These are also areas where you might be able to offer something.

Glad to hear that you made it through that scary time! I have a dear little friend who went through his 3rd open heart surgery almost two years ago at the age of four. I definitely agree with checking directly with the hospital, as there are restrictions for the peds unit that might not have been in place in your unit. One very sweet crafty item that they always needed was heart pillows. I'm not sure if you received one, but the little kids get valentine heart shaped pillows to hug for comfort and to protect their bodies. That might be a nice outlet for you... Congratulations again on your recovery, and for your giving spirit!

Thanks for the input guys!
I really like the idea of the heart pillows. I will make sure to call the hospital to see what rules they have in place.

I know that you posted this a bit ago, but I wanted to add another source to contact. Check and see if your local hospitals have a Child Life department. That's my field of study and they deal directly with the children in the hospital, providing support and comfort. They would have suggestions on what they could use. I'm glad you are recovering well from your surgery!!

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post this...but there is a fantastic website, (not mine!) www.postpals.co.uk who set up profiles and forwarding addresses for children with severe or terminal illnesses so you can send them little cards, letters, gifts etc. There's some advice on the site about what sort of thing to send/write. Doesn't necessarily have to be crafty, just a nice card with a joke or funny poem in is fine, but the sky's the limit really Smiley

What about things they can do by themselves, like coloring books, little drawing sets with markers, puzzles, sewing cards, felt story kits, simple beading kits, and ready to do crafts like the ones from Oriental Trading Co?
