Hello,

It was my granddad's 80th birthday on Wednesday and to celebrate, I made him a surprise birthday cake.

Voila:

It's a chocolate cake covered in melted milk chocolate, with a ring of maltesers round the edge. I also made a fondant version of my granddad, Jim (his name's spelled out on the cake board in maltesers again), which took FOREVER.

I real life you couldn't see all that icing sugar - the flash picked it up in the photo Sad

He's in highland dress - a kilt made from ribbon, white socks and black shoes, a black jacket, and white ruffly shirt. I made his spectacles out of wire.

Here's a picture of my granddad for comparison:

(ok, so not the greatest pic, but you get the idea...)

And one last pic:

That's amazing!  I've wanted to practice more with fondant - I've just done the standard covering and cut outs.

You'll definitely have to let us know what your grandpa said when he saw the cake and his edible self!

It is better to have crafted and failed then never to have crafted at all.
Yes, I am stalking the Toys and Playthings board. Thanks for noticing!
I'm cheating on Craftster with Pinterest. It's ok though. There's overlap.
