I want so much more than they've got planned

I've finally got a job and, with the paycheck I got last night, I'll have enough money to afford a brand spanking new Ashford Kiwi. Got a couple questions, since I'm not going to be able to really buy it until Monday or so.

Should I spend the extra $105 to have it finished, or should I finish it myself? My concern here is that I'm going to screw it up somehow, but it might also be fun to do. Is it difficult? Will I mess up my wheel if I'm not the best at finishing it? And would it be worth the extra hundred to be able to play with it more quickly?

So excited!

I can't really answer your question, b/c I don't have a Kiwi.  What if you finished it with tung oil?  I think that's how my Fricke is finished -- I wonder if that'd be quicker than staining and varnishing.

Anyway -- just wanted to say I'm so excited for you!!!  Buying a wheel is so fun!!!!

I say get it unfinished. Finishing it yourself is really not that difficult, so IMO I think that you'd be wasting a hundred bucks. If you're unsure, talk to someone at your hardware store and they can give you some pointers! Plus, if you wanted to...you could stain it a funky color. Tongue totally fun.

I love all things shiny, glittery, and colorful.

I've got it! I haven't stained it, and because of work (eww!) I haven't gotten to play with it nearly as much as I want. (Stupid work. It's also why I've been curiously absent.) But I have some skeins spun up and I'm going to post pics of them and the wheel when I get a chance. ^_^

Yay for you! The last time I was online you were still on a spindle. It's so exciting when other people get new wheels. Cruising the fiber boards has me totally inspired. I must pull out my wheel.
