My daughter turned 3 yesterday and when asked what she would like for her birthday she said " a rainbow cake and a big dragon".  Her grandparents provided the dragon so it was up to me to supply the rainbow cake.  I was going to take the generic route and make a cake with a rainbow frosted on the top but when I saw this on Martha I knew that she had to have it.  The cake didn't turn out quite as perfect as I would have liked but hey I am pretty impressed with myself for attempting it.

Here's the inside of the cake:

Outside of cake:

And little Gibs with her cake:

Here is Whisk Kids blog with the recipe for the cake and frosting.

Someone had commented on her post about this having too much frosting but the frosting isn't overly sweet like a lot of other frostings and I recieved a few    comments from friends about how the frosting was wonderful because it wasn't too sweet.

Handmade and vintage goodness!

What an awesome birthday wish she made!  I am stealing that for my next one!  There could not be anything better than a rainbow cake and a big dragon!  The cake looks awesome cut!   You never would think all that beauty was hidden under plain white frosting!  Great job!

Way. To. Go.  Shocked

That is one amazing cake! I totally love rainbows, and have seen a few attempts at rainbow cakes (none of which have been this fantastic). You did a really great job on it. It looks absolutely delicious.
