Welcome to the new Crochet Challenge Theme thread!

I don't know how often we'll be doing challenges (it depends almost entirely on finding prizes!), but I'm hoping to do one at least 4 times a year.  That being the case, we need theme ideas!

Suggest a theme here (even if someone else already has) and I'll keep a running tally (including the themes suggested in the Challenge #10 thread), and when voting time comes, I'll take the top 5 suggestions and we'll vote on which one we want to do next!

When we do a theme, I will reset the votes for that theme so that it doesn't make the top 5 unless there's a really big demand to do it again or a significant time has passed. ^_^

So, suggest away!

Out doors
MMORPG
Outer Space

these are just somethings I came up with looking around the house, I could probably come up with more.

I'd suggest expanding MMORPG to just 'video games' in general - a broader theme would hopefully encourage more people to participate!

This idea would probably be too labor intensive or have too long of a wait time, but I would love to see more crocheted dresses. I've always been intimitaded by the idea of crocheting a dress; however, if given the right motivation I think it would be really fun and truly worth the effort.

I thought of a new one, but I'm not sure if it would count as a crochet challenge. "Repurposed Crochet" Take 1 or more crocheted items and make them into something else.

How about a "Childhood Memories" one (or something like that) with Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, etc. Basically things from your childhood.

I'm not sure if this is what you had in mind, but my current "portable project" is a blanket that I'm making to recreate one my Mom made before I was born, because it's one of my childhood memories!

Crocheted cozies. EVERYTHING needs a cozy, right? Toasters, cans of beer, even our TV if we'd bother to make it one!

LOL! I love this idea. It's like yarn-bombing your own house  Grin. The family could wake up one morning and everything is wrapped in crochet comfy-ness. I can just picture mine saying..."everything's ok, no one wants to hurt you, but please put down the hook and slowly step away from the yarn." Awesome.

That's awesome, chuckled when i read it! We could even make cozies for stuff that do Not need cozies, or just 'unnecessary cozies' and how about 'stupid or insane cozies'? This idea is worth keeping!

Anime (Japanese style animation, for those who don't know)
Crazy pet clothing (apologies in advance to the pets, lol)
Literature inspired (stuff from favored books, or maybe unique and interesting bookmarks and book covers)
Freeform lace (I love that this has been suggested already, crocheted randomness does not get enough hype, IMO)

Can't think of any others right now, but hope someone likes my ideas!

LOL - showing my age here. I thought ATC was All Terrain Vehicle  Tongue

Here are a few random thoughts...

  • Imaginary creatures
  • Something that reminds you of summer
  • Voodoo dolls for the workplace
  • Favorite cut of meat
  • Facial expressions (could include body language)
  • Diorama (e.g., tacky landscaping, nosy neighbors, favorite TV show, scene from a movie, scenery of some sort)
  • Your interpretation of a wireless network
  • Fish on a stick
  • What your parents wanted you to be when you grew up
  • Diorama of what the workplace would look like without you

to expand on one of your random thoughts maybe instead of just imaginary creatures, how about imaginary friends. people could do what their imaginary friend as a child might have been or a child's friend might look like. could be human or a creature

I've got my "suggested themes" spreadsheet updated to this point (yay!).

We're going to vote on the theme for the next challenge soon, so if you've been meaning to add a suggestion to this list, now's the time to do it!

I saw the dresses and swimsuit coverups in may and started to do a search for dresses and the only crocheted dresses you can find are from the 60's that have an available free pattern. I have been tempted to exaggerate some baby dresses to make it fit me. Its something I keep finding myself looking at but have yet committed to.

Here are some of my suggestions:
- Original amigurumi
- scrap busting projects
- motifs
- using motifs in a manner that is not an afghan
- best interpretation of a knit pattern converted to crochet
- crocheted items used for yarn bombing

I'm excited to see what the next challenge will bring!  Grin

I know that throughout November (maybe for the future?) Michael's is serving as drop-off places for Warm Up America, maybe in the future we could hold a challenge as to who can crochet/knit the most squares and or blankets?

Michaels is supposed to be running the Warm Up America / Warm Up Canada campaigns year-round.  The Canadian stores used to do Blankets For Canada, but recently changed, so if you're in Canada, check with your store to see what size motifs they're taking (B4C took 8" squares, WUC is asking for 7x9" rectangles).

Though, I'm someone who works at Michaels and who ran the B4C program quite successfully all last year, and even I don't know what we're doing now, so expect that the store associates might not know what you're talking about. Tongue

ETA: there was an idea kicking around a while back about the crochet board challenging the knitting board to see who could make the most squares.  I still think that would be cool. ^_^

I was thinking, to make it more international, people could Finn a local group that takes squares and we'd determine who wins by square inches.

That would leave it open for all square sizes as well as strips and full blankets.

Perhaps we could have bragging rights for the board that wins, a prize for the most square inches on each board, and maybe a vote for favourite square on each board.

Not sure how doable that all is, though.
