A friend of mine is looking to start working with sewing vinyl to make a camera bag AND she has a birthday in May, so when I saw this pattern weight tutorial(http://fivegreenacres.wordpress.com/2010/02/17/tools-of-the-trade-pattern-weights/), I was inspired to make her a set and then to decorate a container to hold them in.

The container which was a Swiss Colony chocolate tin:

I spray painted it, cut some pretty paper with a circle cutter and then cut the birdies and text from a vintage greeting card I had in my card stash.

The weights nestled in the tin:

The tutorial made 5 weights, but the length of fabric I had worked out to make 7 weights.

The weights on the loose:

I added ribbon loops to one end thinking it might make them easier to grab from across the cutting table.

The inside of the tin lid:

I used the message from the inside of the card to make the tin the card.

The tin's bottom:

I used another paper circle to cover the bottom of the tin because there was some residue from the original ingredients label.  In this photo you can kind of see the iridescent quality to the paper.  Originally it said "Tin Made In Mexico" on it so when I saw "Made in USA" on the back of the card I decided to add it because it tickled me.

Thanks for looking!

What a thoughtful gift!  I'm not sure which part I like best - the weights or the birds.

Thank you!  I was digging through my cards and was just going to use the card as a card, but I'm really glad I decided to cut it up.

Cool idea! Great birthday gift too.

Thank you!  She seemed to like it.

Thanks!  I decided to put the handles in before I found that I had the perfect size of tin, so I thought they'd also be an option for storing them.  I know her craft/art supply storage situation and realized that they would need a container, so I'm relieved that I could come up with a cute one with materials on-hand.

Thank you!  And thanks for the feature!  Look at me, look at me!  I'm going to put it on my Facebook page.  WHEE!
