Details of Swap: Don't you love your favorite recipes? They comfort and impress, and they never let you down! Well, one thing I love as much as my fave recipes is trying out new ones. So here is the idea for this swap...

* Exchange 5 of your favorite recipes (ones you know and love…send only ones you have actually made)

* Recipes must include at least one main, one side, & one sweet treat (sweet treat could be a fave fruit dish)

* You will exchange recipes in a group of 3-5 people (you can pick to be in one or two groups)

* You must recognize the source of your recipe (book, relative, website...see quote below for additional details)

* No photocopies of recipes (please either type or neatly write)

* No DC# will be required, but if an envelope/package goes astray, you must resend

Recipes are actually kind of weird. From the copyright office:

Basically, recipes aren't copyrightable, but their instructions might be. Emphasis on might. It depends on the format, I think. However, it is VERY important that the Craftster know that online recipes are likely to contain the same copyright protection, such as it is, as any recipes found in books. In other words, just because it is "free on the net" doesn't mean it's not copyrighted, as much as it is possible to copyright any recipe, which is less than other things. lol Like I said, recipes are weird.

So, for the posting recipes in thread, I would say, they should find a link, just like when my knitters want to post a pattern they like. If they can't find a link to the actual pattern, then we request they list the source material, but not the actual pattern.

But for the guidelines for source material for the actual cookbooks... All the recipes on FoodNetwork actually have a copyright notice. The best source is going to be old cookbooks or family recipes. There's really no way around that. I don't know what limited rights are granted to users on the recipe websites, but theoretically they have the right to print off at least one copy of a recipe for personal use, and if they choose to make a scrap cookbook for someone else out of that copy of the recipe, then I suspect that would fall under fair use. But she would probably want to research the specific rights granted by each specific website, because they'll all be a little different.
