My partner in the Farmer's Market swap mentioned she would like little reusable shopping bags to use for bulk bin items or fruit. I came up with these ones made from tea towels.

And here's how I did it!

Start with a regular-sized tea towel. Mine was around 24" x 12".

Fold in half long way, good sides facing out.

Fold in half again the other way.

Cut down that fold. You will only use half of the tea towel for the first bag!

Make a pattern based on the size of the pieces of tea towel you now have that looks like an old-timey liquor bottle. I would say that the "stem" should be at least 5" - this will be half of your handle (so if you make the stem 5", you get 10" to tuck your hand into).

Trace the pattern onto the chunk you have left, bad sides together. Cut around all sections but the very top line.

Leaving it as it is (bad sides together), sew around the bottom circle, starting a little ways down from the strap, where my sewing machine is aimed at in this picture.

Flip it inside out and sew around the same section but leaving a greater seam allowance - doing a French seam.

Flip it to its right side, and this is what you get

Fold in the rough edges - twice if you want a neat edge on the inside - and sew.

Tidy up any hairy bits, and there you have it.

And... here's the products of two tea towels (fresh from the sewing table, so some loose strings and sewing chalk remain!)

I could use one of those to purchase my doggie treats at the feed store!!  They look to be a perfect size for that and are washable as well!

Thanks for the tute!!
