I'm learning to knit at the moment - and for the longest time I could ony manage squares (or rectangles) - nothing that required shaping of any kind. The little guys/girls below are the product of this period (all made as presents for different people) and were made from a basic pattern which I modified a bit
First we have Eco-Monkey - made for my dad who has a huge passion for environmental issues and is a bit of an all-round hippy

His ears are supposed to look like leaves :

Next is Music Monkey, made for someone who teaches piano (he has music notes sewn all over and a mini piano stitched onto his behind)!

Then Chic-y Monkey, made for a fan of the Shabby Chic style:

Money-Love made for a tennis fan:

And lastly - Monk Tee, made for a golfer - Monk Tee comes with a little pocket on his back to carry around golf tees, and his own miniature golf clubs (for playing minature golf of course) :
