What length of circs do you need? I have 10.5 in 16"
You need longer ones. The circs are because of the number of sts, the shrug is knit flat and it's very difficult to do that with 16". At least 24", but 29-32" would be great and is the most versatile size because you can knit a sweater in the round with them, a shawl, or a smaller blanket/throw.

I hate how knit picks doesn't have their larger needles with longer cables >.< Ho hum, The pattern does say "or" so that means I can use straight needles, yes?

if straight needles would work I would assume 16" circs would. I am using a 29", so i can stretch it out and look at my stitches.
I have already fudged it a few times, and somehow lost my last stitch. fortunately it doesn't effect the lace pattern, so I am just going with it. 7" done, 12" to go!

I'm planning to use straights. I cast on but I need to know how to slip the first stitch of my cast on row. Anyone have a good video or picture tut on that? I keep trying but the stitch just comes untwisted and falls off.
Do I need to use a different cast on method? Or do I need to knit my first stitch and slip the next one?
Ideas welcome.

i ALWAYS use a knitted cast on of some type. The basic cast on grandma taught me is TOO fiddly and you get those huge gaps.... yikes.
that said, if you use a traditional cast on you don't need to slip the 1st stitch, and honestly, you could go teh whole pattern without slipping the 1st stitch. A lot of people on ravelry said it actually didn't produce a cleaner edge, which is the purpose of doing that.
this is the cast on I tend to use:

I've only had a problem with it leaving big gaps in my first knitting project. I've been using it for pretty much everything since then.
Good to know it doesn't make a difference. I can carry on then!

I finally finish Clapotis (from Knitty.com), should've frogged back to where I dropped some stitches but was afraid I'd get the twists a effed up... now one of my rows only runs halfway down! So I wanna redeem myself with a smaller/ shorter project. Crocheting shrugs for my 2 girls to wear to a wedding, wanna try this for meself! Now what yarn to use...

i love this bolero.
i got out my knitting needles and neon-pink yarn - both left from when i was in primary school (the last time i knitted anything)
it took me 2 days to produce a somehow acceptable piece of ribbed cloth, so if i manage to knit a decent piece of that lace, i will join.
