This is a collage I've made.  Its actually the second or third one, the other two i gave to my friend.  Its really fun and relaxing to make, a great way to used old magazines and news papers and a really good way to express yourself also if you are feeling the need.  If anyone has other collaging ideas or finished projects, id love to hear about- or see them!

I had the best art teacher in high school.  He taught us to keep image files; they were big folders full of interesting images ripped from magazines.  Each student would have their own and the pictures could be used to build collages or as models for drawings.  National Geographic magazine is probably the best for this because it has a wide range of images and really good, thick paper.

Plus, it is easy to make big collages quickly.

I love collage!  Here's one I did of my trip to Barcelona, I wanted something else to remind me of my trip other than a photo album that I would never pull out and look at.  Sorry for the glare...

I really like the Barcelona collage Thumbelina, such a good idea to remember a trip, cos you're right, you never really bother looking at photo albums as much as you should do. Definetly doing that for my next trip!

I love all of your collages.  Smiley  Very cool.  --I also like the idea of making a trip collage...now I just have to go somewhere so I can make one!    Grin

As for collages, I make collage postcards and send them to people.  Here's one.

Cool collages, everybody!  Selenium's looks like it took a lot of work!

Keiko, do you paint something on top of your postcards so the pieces don't come off in the mail?

A collage postcard swap sounds like a good idea.  I just bought a whole bunch of picture frame matting at an estate sale and that would work great for a home made postcard.  Posterboard would probably also work.

I really like collaging Smiley I keep an image file.  I get most of my pictures from Smithsonian, but I get some from old National Geographics, Vogue, and some cheesy teen magazines.

I gave this one to my girlfriend for Christmas, the lyrics are from Ani DiFranco-Falling is like this

Eek, sorry for not checking this post back earlier everyone.  Yes, I either use Mod Podge or I'll just color copy it onto Glossy cardstock.  I like the glossy cardstock because the images still look like magazine cutouts and not so matte.  And then I cut them out with my Xacto.  --For a backing I just use these plain index cards that I found at a local craft shop.  They're 4.5" by 5.25" I think.  Thanks for all the comments.   Cheesy

Postcard swap?  I'm totally for it!!!

I collaged the outside of my first car, with black and white classic movie stars and lots of glitter. It was a lot of fun to keep adding to it. I used clear acrylic to put them on. Unfortunately i don't have photos, only a memory.

this is my dresser, which i collaged about a year ago. i used to have a really bad magazine habit in my teens so i had a ton of cosmogirls, ym's, seventeens, us, people, cosmo....etc. and my mother forced me to get rid of them so i replaced the magazine buying habit with a magazine cutting habit.

now i'm only allowed to buy glamour and people. luckily i still have tons of cosmos because i just recently decided it was an awful magazine and i shouldn't contribute money to them, even if they are good for making collages.

anyway, here it is:

I'm also a poet and I mostly make collages to illustrate my poems. I then use them as fliers and either hand them out when i do a performance or send them to friends or fellow bookcrossers (see www.bookcrossing.com to find out more about that international booksharing community). I also make collage greetings cards. I wanted to include a photo here but can't seem to at the minute.....

I did a greetings card but it wasn't from magazines, just scraps of paper, fabric & sequins.  Inspired to do one with pics from magazines after looking at everyone's fab collages on here.  In fact I may go and do one later today for my friends birthday...  Grin

... how do you store your images between projects? i hate how i keep all these magazines that take up a lot of space just to use for collage. and when i cut the images out they just get all lost or folded...

i found 4 milk crates in our old barn (the plastic, square kind)
cleaned them up, spray painted them black, and stacked two
ontop of eachother. they're the perfect storage size
for all my mags/tall books/etc.  i also use a cheap, plastic
tupperwear-type storage bin (found at walmart) that fits
under my bed. i keep a lot of my glue, scrapbook paper,
other supplies in it.

as for the image clippings, i keep a binder with those clear
plastic sleeves (used for paper protector). they're great
since you can see the clippings & just grab exactly what
you want to use. they're slick so the magazine type paper
doesn't bunch up. i also organized them: bigger clippings in one,
medium sized in another, etc.

these are AWESOME collages!
i'll have to post pictures of the walls in my room.
i've collaged the heck out of them Tongue

As I'm reading magazines, I rip out pages that catch my eye.  I'm really into bright colors and cool textures, and catchy (and usually ironic) phrases from advertisements.  All of those go into an expanding file folder with built-in dividers - full pages as is, smaller images trimmed and stuck into envolopes.  I try to keep it organized by theme and/or color so it's easy to find stuff.  Then I can toss the magazines, or, if they're not too mangled, donate them to a local non-profit that uses them with their clients for art projects.  I used to have boxes and boxes of magazines, but those darn things are heavy to move and take up a lot of space.  This method means that I can use all that space for all my other craft and art supplies...  Heh heh.

That is exactly how I do it, too.  I divide them by theme, though.. photos of people, depictions of people, flora, fauna, objects, backgrounds, color, words, ads.  Yikes, that's a lot   Embarrassed  Obviously I have too many images, and it is time to use them already!  Anyway, that's why threads like this are so helpful.   Smiley

Polaritygirl,

Are you doing any Soul Collage work?  One collage activity that has always fascinated me, but I haven't done yet, is creating your own tarot/goddess deck using matte board or manilla file folder paper.  I love the idea because of the symbolism involved.

My current project is a goddess/"women in their power" theme collage on a mache dressmaker's mannequin.  That's pretty vivid for body image issues.
