I'm a volunteer at the animal shelter here in town and we have walked dogs in the parade for the past 3 years. So the mission this year was to create something eye-catching that wouldn't take up too much space on a 10x5 trailer for the annual Christmas parade. So I give you a 4w x 6h x 2d dog house.

At first we were going to go the traditional chicken wire and tissue paper route, but I decided if I was going to put in the work/time, why not make something reusable? So I set out to make a modular PVC and canvas dog house. The entire thing will break down and roll up for storage. The roof and the base are two separate pieces that are attached with several zip ties. Then the canvas is just cut from a large canvas drop cloth from the hardware store, an lashed with cotton twine to the pvc frame (through eyelets).

This photo is after our first coat of paint with the power sprayer. We went back in and touched it up with brushes, but this picture was taken after we quickly moved it up on the porch wet because it was starting to rain. My driveway looked like a Dexter crime scene!

The roof is felt with a few seams sewn at the corners and a gingerbread style scallop cut around the edge. It's also got a couple of sleeves on either side for the fabric to go through. The dog house door is leftover felt, just glued on and wrapped around a slit I cut in the canvas underneath (needed it open to store supplies). There's also a felt Christmas sprig that is currently pinned on because we want to be able to use the dog house to draw attention for our next benefit yard sale.

Here's a picture of it in the warehouse - please ignore the clothespins on the front. I hope to have a picture of it in action, with the lights on tomorrow. We won "Best Animal Entry" (100 dollar prize!) and had enough volunteers to take EVERY available dog at the shelter to the parade! I would say it was a rousing success...

Forgot to add, We made the dog and cat too - they're papier mache and based on the characters on the back of our volunteer shirts (details here http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=395108.msg4678886#msg4678886)

Congratulations! I don't know what I find cooler, that you were forward thinking enough to make it reusable, that your entry won first prize, or that you had enough volunteers to take all of the dogs out on such a great outing. Anyway, I agree - Definitely a success!

This is so wonderful!  I'm inclined to love anything done to help shelter pets, but even without that, it's super great!  So cute and eyecatching.  I bet your dog house it going to become one of the traditions people look forward to in the parade every year.  I'm really looking forward to seeing the action shot(s)!

Thanks for looking!
A couple of action shots. I've got to figure out a good way of securing the gingerbread flaps on the roof to the house, they kept flapping and exposing the PVC frame.
