Lady L, the problem wasn't where to start but when to stop! It's pretty addictive when you get going on it.

You can see from the gallery that everyone has their own interpretation of the style: some are flat, some are very 3-D, some are large plain areas with clearly-defined appliqus, some are crazy all-over patchwork, etc.

I didn't really know where to start either, but my partner had said she liked 1940's styles and rich, jewel-like colours. I had originally imagined making something pale and fairy-like (like Cassadee's dress) and this was a 180-degree shift. So I started with a photo of a late 1940's day dress I liked, and this postcard. The rest was just going through boxes of fabric pieces for raw materials. (I ended up using a lot of the white stuff I'd collected for the underskirt.)

I looked at a lot of the stuff from the Gibbous site for inspiration, mostly regarding technique, not overall look, as I was aiming for something different. Now, of course, you can get even more inspiration from the stuff in this gallery! Wow!

So just sit down and do it. Start anywhere; work backwards and forwards; if you don't like something, just cut it off and add something else, or sew more over top of it. No ripping out in this kind of sewing!

Well said, and love leaving the seam ripper behind, not that I can ever find it anyway.

I think I'm going to try my hand at making myself something gibbous - Am thinking of making myself a vest/waistcoat. Perhaps we should start a gibbous stitchalong....

Jumping in to add my interest in gaining some skills in the art of gibbous-ing, haha.  A stitchalong sounds great.  I am finishing up some swaps and then I would love to try my hand at this.  Maybe if I successfully complete something I'll feel confident enough to join the next round of this swap!

Lots of craftalongs are still going on, and no deadline like swaps. Sounds fun.
