I am an aspiring roller girl. However, I cannot skate. I had a lovely bruise last week to prove it. I'm working on it though. So, I've decided to take on some crafts to give myself a little confidence. I mean, if you make a craft you have to show it off, right? And if it's on my skates, I have to skate to show it off. Anyways...here we go. Skating advice and encouragement also welcome.

Pom poms...just like old school roller disco!

And for my entertainment, crazy or crazy awesome as a hair accessory?

Love the pom poms, but you might want to move them a little higher up on your skate, otherwise you will be sweeping the floor with them when you use your toe stops.  Wink Just some advice from an ex-rollergirl. Also the better your wheels are the less you will slip because they will grab better and make your turns faster. Trust me some of our best skaters were once wall huggers and could not skate at all. Just be aggressive and don't doubt yourself and you will do fine.

haha! thanks for the advice. they're on clips so they are going to be moved up. but they looked better lower for the pictures. i'm in the process of getting some skating lessons, dragging friends to rinks in the near future and hopefully becoming decent.

The pompoms are totally cute. I remember wearing pompoms on my skates back in the day!!

As for derby: you would not be the first girl who came to derby unable to skate. Don't let it get you down! When I started 6 months ago, I could skate, but just barely. I hadn't skated, really, in 25 years (I'm 40) ... and although I knew how to stay up and move forward, that was pretty much it.

On April 17, I passed my WFTDA minimum skills test. The way I improved as much as I did was by going to as many practices as I could (usually 4 a week), plus a *lot* of rink skating early on.

Just keep trying, don't get discouraged, and skate as much as you can. You'll get there!!

thanks so much for the reply. i took a lesson last week which didn't go to well. i fell twice marching around and i think my instructor hated me. i haven't giving up yet but finding time to skate is hard at the moment. i'm a teacher so the year will end soon and i'll have plenty of time for nothing but learning Smiley

Thank you so much for this, I just listed myself to the Freshmeat Training Period, I can't skate AT ALL and...yes, I'm 40. It was great to hear that there is hope!

Skating is hard! At least you're going to look fantastic while learning Smiley.

I'm certain your dedication will pay off. Keep it up.

Your pom poms and crazy awesome hair accessory look marvelous!
